Department of Digestive Medicine
The Department of Digestive Medicine at the Civil Aviation Campus of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital has always adhered to the core service philosophy of “people-centered care, pursuing excellence through the ‘scope’” and serves as a comprehensive digestive disease diagnosis and treatment center integrating chronic disease diagnosis and treatment in gastroenterology, diagnosis and treatment of difficult diseases, high-end minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, early digestive tract cancer screening, and specialized interventions; it consists of two core units: the Department of Gastroenterology and the Digestive Endoscopy Center. The department has strong overall capabilities, a well-structured talent team, and advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment. It is dedicated to providing residents of the region with comprehensive, individualized, finely tailored, high-level digestive health diagnostic and treatment services, and is a core medical force safeguarding the gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, and pancreaticobiliary health of the public. The department currently has more than 20 medical and nursing staff members and 40 operational beds, and brings together numerous highly educated, highly credentialed professional and technical personnel, including 2 physicians with senior professional titles, 2 medical doctors with doctoral degrees, and 4 with master’s degrees in medicine. This highly qualified, specialized team provides a solid foundation for the department’s precise, minimally invasive, and standardized diagnostic and treatment services. The Department of Gastroenterology at the Civil Aviation Campus focuses on the conservative treatment and comprehensive management of various common, frequently occurring, and difficult digestive system diseases, with standardized internal medicine diagnosis and treatment, long-term chronic disease management, and differential diagnosis and treatment of difficult conditions as its core strengths; it covers diagnosis and treatment across the full spectrum of digestive diseases while balancing therapeutic efficacy with patients’ recovery experience. The department regularly receives and manages all types of diseases related to the esophagus, stomach and intestines, liver and gallbladder, and pancreas. Its core disease categories include: constipation, various acute and chronic liver diseases, Helicobacter pylori infection, gastroesophageal reflux disease, inflammatory bowel disease, peptic ulcer, gastrointestinal bleeding, cirrhosis, and other common and frequently occurring digestive system diseases. It also undertakes the differential diagnosis, comprehensive treatment, and prognostic management of difficult and critically ill digestive diseases. Featured treatment techniques: 1. Standardized chronic disease diagnosis, treatment, and management: For highly prevalent chronic diseases such as Helicobacter pylori infection, gastroesophageal reflux, chronic constipation, inflammatory bowel disease, and chronic liver disease, the department has established a standardized, full-process system covering diagnosis and treatment, repeat examinations, and follow-up; it precisely develops individualized medication, diet, lifestyle, and rehabilitation plans, effectively controls disease recurrence, and improves patients’ long-term quality of life. 2. Treatment of difficult, acute, and critical illnesses: The department is proficient in the emergency treatment of digestive emergencies such as gastrointestinal bleeding, severe inflammation, and liver injury, and has mature capabilities in the assessment, resuscitation, and comprehensive treatment of acute and critically ill patients, ensuring safe and efficient diagnosis and treatment. It excels in the diagnosis and treatment of all kinds of complex, recurrent, and unexplained difficult digestive diseases, accurately differentiating disease types, avoiding misdiagnosis and missed diagnoses, and providing professional diagnostic and treatment plans for patients whose conditions have not been cured despite prolonged treatment. 3. Comprehensive general medical symptomatic treatment: For acute and critical conditions such as gastrointestinal bleeding, complications of cirrhosis, and severe gastrointestinal inflammation, the department has mature emergency and comprehensive rescue capabilities, can rapidly stabilize patients’ conditions, and provides systematic symptomatic treatment. The Digestive Endoscopy Center at the Civil Aviation Campus is the core specialized diagnostic and treatment unit of the Department of Digestive Medicine. With minimally invasive, precise, efficient, and low-trauma care as its core advantages, it relies on a full suite of state-of-the-art endoscopic equipment and a mature minimally invasive technology system to overcome the drawbacks of traditional open abdominal surgery, including extensive trauma and slow recovery. It focuses on early digestive tract cancer screening, minimally invasive endoscopic surgery, interventional treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases, and obesity and weight-loss interventions, providing integrated minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment services covering “examination, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation.” Its core services include endoscopic examinations for digestive tract diseases, early digestive tract cancer screening, minimally invasive resection of gastrointestinal polyps, minimally invasive interventional treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases, relief of digestive tract strictures and obstructions, emergency endoscopic treatment of gastrointestinal bleeding, endoscopic minimally invasive treatment of appendicitis, noninvasive screening for small-intestinal diseases, and weight-loss treatment with gastric bypass stents, covering the vast majority of examination and surgical indications in digestive endoscopy. Featured treatment techniques: 1. Center for Detailed Evaluation and Minimally Invasive Radical Treatment of Early Digestive Tract Cancer: The center is equipped with high-definition electronic chromoendoscopes (NBI/FICE/BLI), magnifying endoscopes, and other cutting-edge equipment. Through special-light imaging and 100-fold optical magnification, it clearly captures minute digestive tract lesions, abnormal blood vessels, and glandular duct structures, substantially increasing the detection rates of early esophageal, gastric, and colorectal cancers. It routinely performs two core minimally invasive techniques: EMR endoscopic mucosal resection and ESD endoscopic submucosal dissection. These can completely remove polyps of different sizes, flat lesions, and early cancerous tissue, preserving the integrity of digestive tract organs to the greatest extent and offering the advantages of minimal trauma, rapid postoperative recovery, and favorable prognosis. At the same time, it works in coordination with the pathology department to integrate biopsy, diagnosis, and treatment and prevent missed diagnoses and misdiagnoses. 2. Minimally invasive interventional diagnosis and treatment of biliary and pancreatic diseases: ERCP, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, is the core signature technique. The center performs a series of minimally invasive procedures, including duodenal papillary sphincterotomy, bile duct stone extraction, and biliary/pancreatic duct stent placement. Without laparotomy, it can efficiently treat common bile duct stones, biliary/pancreatic duct obstruction, jaundice, and various other biliary and pancreatic diseases, substantially shortening patients’ recovery periods. 3. Precise diagnosis and assessment with endoscopic ultrasound: Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS), known as the “third eye of digestive physicians,” can enter deep into the digestive tract lumen and perform real-time ultrasound scanning to examine the digestive tract wall, submucosal lesions, and pancreatic lesions. It can precisely determine the depth of invasion of digestive tract tumors and the presence of lymph node metastasis. It is a core technology for diagnosing submucosal tumors and difficult pancreatic diseases and provides a key basis for clinicians to formulate individualized treatment plans. 4. Specialized interventional treatment of digestive tract obstruction and weight loss: The center is proficient in balloon dilation of esophageal and intestinal anastomotic strictures, rapidly reopening narrowed digestive tracts. For malignant obstruction caused by advanced digestive tumors, stent placement rapidly re-establishes channels for eating and defecation. It has also innovatively developed a weight-loss technique using gastroduodenal stent placement, providing people with obesity with a safe, efficient, and new minimally invasive weight-loss option. 5. Endoscopic emergency hemostatic treatment: The center is proficient in using various minimally invasive techniques, including titanium clip closure, high-frequency electrocoagulation, argon plasma coagulation (APC), and drug-injection hemostasis, to rapidly manage acute massive gastrointestinal bleeding caused by ulcers, vascular malformations, and other conditions. It offers high emergency rescue efficiency and few complications, safeguarding patients’ lives. 6. Innovative noninvasive and minimally invasive diagnostic and treatment technologies: The center performs ERAT endoscopic retrograde appendicitis treatment, breaking with the traditional diagnostic and treatment model that appendicitis must be treated by surgical removal and preserving the appendix’s physiological function through a minimally invasive approach, with little trauma and rapid recovery. It is equipped with capsule endoscopy, enabling noninvasive, painless imaging screening of the entire small intestine, overcoming the difficulty of diagnosing small-intestinal diseases and meeting the examination needs of older adults, children, and patients unable to tolerate conventional endoscopy.
