Benefiting from the rapid development of the hospital in the new era, under the wise guidance of leaders at all levels of the hospital, and under the leadership of Director Zhou Shenyang and Director Yang Guosheng, the first and second heads of the department, and Director Qiu Xiaofu, the current head of the department, after fifteen years of rapid development through the united dedication, diligence, innovation and pioneering spirit of all medical and nursing staff, it has now become a comprehensive discipline integrating talent, equipment, technology, medical care, education and research, ranking first-class in the province, advanced nationally and renowned worldwide. The discipline is characterized by “minimally invasive” and “laser” as its leading technologies, and frequently participates in various public-benefit medical activities through the “Micro-Light Action”. In recent years, as the hospital entered the ranks of high-level hospitals in the province, the department has caught up in every aspect and begun a phase of leapfrog development. The urology discipline complex of the Second People’s Hospital of Guangdong Province has 100 beds, operates at the Pazhou Campus, Civil Aviation Campus, Zhuhai Campus, Jieyang Campus and Heyuan Campus, has a daily outpatient and emergency volume of 200 person-visits, an annual outpatient and emergency volume of 40,000 person-visits, nearly 4000+ hospitalized patients annually, and an annual surgical volume of 3500+ procedures. It has functional units including an inpatient department, outpatient department, endoscopy room and laboratory, and has established subspecialties for laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment, minimally invasive stone treatment, prostate disease diagnosis and treatment, urogenital system tumor diagnosis and treatment, and andrology, as well as an extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy center, comprehensively covering the diagnosis and treatment of common and difficult diseases in the routine spectrum of urology and andrology. The department currently has 36 medical and nursing staff, including 15 physicians, 3 people who studied or visited abroad, 2 chief physicians (professors), 4 associate chief physicians (associate professors), 1 postdoctoral fellow, 3 doctors with doctoral degrees and 13 with master’s degrees. It is currently a postgraduate training site of Southern Medical University, Jinan University, Guangdong Medical University and Guangdong University of Technology. Urology is currently a constituent department of a key discipline under Guangdong Province’s “13th Five-Year Plan”, a standardized residency training base for urology of the National Health Commission, and a key discipline and advanced department of our hospital. It is the 2012 Ministry of Health Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Medicine Urology Training Base, the 2019 editorial board unit of “Wu Jieping’s Urology”; the Guangdong Provincial Second People’s Hospital Green Laser Urology Application Research and Training Center, the host unit of the Yangcheng Urology and Andrology Forum, a CUA “Belt and Road” precision medicine Guangdong-Xinjiang cooperation unit, and a member unit of the Urology and Andrology Branches of the Guangdong Medical Association; it also serves as an expert unit for reviews of the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation and science and technology projects, an expert unit for medical appraisal in Guangdong Province, and an editorial board unit of the Journal of Modern Urogenital Tumors and the Journal of Minimally Invasive Urology. In 2019, it was an expert in the “Directory of Famous Doctors of Lingnan” and a unit of the Second Yangcheng Good Doctors. Technical Features of Urology I. A national-level endoscopy training base and high-end endoscopic minimally invasive technologyThe department continuously develops and innovates in minimally invasive surgery, with comprehensive development of minimally invasive surgical techniques. It is the Ministry of Health Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Medicine Urology Training Base and one of the first Green Laser Urology Application Research and Training Centers in China (2 centers among the first batch nationwide). It has successfully performed more than 10,000 procedures of transurethral green laser prostatectomy, 3D and high-definition laparoscopic urological surgery, electronic flexible ureteroscope surgery, percutaneous nephrolithotomy with ultrasound hybrid-power lithotripsy and other procedures, with an endoscopic minimally invasive surgery rate exceeding 83%. It was the first in China to perform ultra-fine and bloodless minimally invasive techniques including green laser prostate surgery, 3D laparoscopy, ureteroscopy and modified single-port multi-channel laparoscopy. It has developed in step with international urology and ranks among the advanced level in China. II. Advanced and comprehensive minimally invasive equipment, standardized and meticulous specialty diagnosis and treatmentThe department possesses the world’s advanced complete high-definition minimally invasive surgical systems: a ureterorenoscope with a flexible distal end, a combined green laser, thulium laser and holmium laser system, a single-use flexible ureteroscope system, an Olympus electronic ureteroscope, Olympus and Wolf high-definition and 3D laparoscopic systems, a German Wolf ureteroscope, a Wolf nephroscope, a fourth-generation EMS hybrid-power lithotripsy system, a UK Gyrus plasma cutting system, a pneumatic ballistic lithotripter and hydraulic perfusion pump, a German Andromeda urodynamic instrument, a pelvic-floor microwave treatment system, a penile erection sensitivity tester, an ultrasonic cutting system and other advanced equipment worth over 10 million yuan. It has a Ministry of Health Endoscopy and Minimally Invasive Medicine Urology Training Base and a Green Laser Urology Application Research and Training Center, and has established carefully developed and comprehensive subspecialties including laparoscopic diagnosis and treatment, minimally invasive stone diagnosis and treatment, prostate disease diagnosis and treatment, urogenital system tumor diagnosis and treatment, andrology diagnosis and treatment of external genital diseases, and an extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy center, comprehensively covering the diagnosis and treatment of common and difficult diseases in urology and andrology. An innovative discipline with a growing reputation at home and abroad, and a dedicated team with leading standards in education, science and researchThe minimally invasive technology of the Department of Urology is increasingly renowned at home and abroad, and its standards in medical education, scientific research and clinical work are leading. It has served as a member of the Stone Group of the Urology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the International Alliance of Urolithiasis and the Chinese Urinary Stone Alliance, as a drafting unit of the “Ministry of Health Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Standards”, as an editorial board and chapter secretary unit of the “Chinese Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Urological Diseases”, and as one of the first specialist physician training units for minimally invasive technology in urology in China. It has a Ministry of Health Urology Minimally Invasive Technology Training Base and a Green Laser Urology Application Research and Training Center, and provides training for urologists at all levels from throughout the country. The fields of endoscopic minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment andrology in urology enjoy a high reputation domestically and internationally. Research, training and cultivation bases have been established with the world-famous USC School of Medicine in the United States and the University of Rochester Cancer Center in the United States. It has received praise from famous urology experts in China and abroad, including Gill, Zhang Chuanxiang, Guo Yinglu, Na Yanqun, Ye Zhangqun, Huang Jian, Xie Liping, Jiang Hui and Gao Xin. More than 100 academic papers have been published in professional journals in China and abroad, including 20 papers indexed by SCI; 2 books have been edited and 6 books jointly edited; it has led or participated as a principal contributor in 1 subproject of the National 863 Program and 1 project of the National Natural Science Foundation; it has undertaken 2 projects of the Guangdong Provincial Natural Science Foundation, 1 Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Plan project, 3 Guangdong Provincial Medical Research Fund projects, 1 Guangdong Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Research Fund project, and a Guangzhou Science and Technology Plan project group item, with more than 1 million yuan in research funds currently under way. The specialized features of urology include: 1. Urology Minimally Invasive Diagnosis and Treatment Center: including urological laparoscopic surgery, percutaneous nephrolithotomy, ureteroscopic lithotripsy and so on. 2. Andrology Disease Diagnosis and Treatment Center: including diagnosis and treatment of erectile dysfunction, male infertility, prostatitis and male external genital diseases. 3. Lower Urinary Tract Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Urology: including urodynamic examination, transurethral laser enucleation of the prostate, plasma electrotomy and cystoscopic surgery, cold-knife incision for urethral stricture, hypospadias repair and so on. 4. Extracorporeal Shock-Wave Lithotripsy Center: extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy has been performed for 20 years, with more than 10000 person-visits for lithotripsy cases, and the lithotripsy results have reached an advanced level in China. 5. Urology and Andrology Remote Expert Diagnosis and Treatment Center: famous urology and andrology experts from Shanghai, Beijing and other parts of the country are invited to conduct remote diagnosis and treatment.
