Thoracic Surgery
Department Introduction The Institute of Chest Wall Surgery of the Second People's Hospital of Guangdong Province was established in 2018 and consists of the chest wall surgery and cardiothoracic surgery wards. It is a national standardized residency training base, with a rational personnel structure and strong technical capabilities. It currently has 60 regularly allocated beds and 10 intensive care unit beds. Cardiothoracic Surgery is a key clinical development discipline in Guangdong Province. The department currently has 1 chief physician, 3 deputy chief physicians, 3 attending physicians, and 3 resident physicians; among them, 1 has a doctoral degree and 5 have master's degrees; the nursing team has 21 members. The discipline is oriented toward basic research and clinical minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of thoracic surgical diseases. Its diagnostic and treatment scope mainly includes pulmonary diseases (small pulmonary nodules, benign and malignant pulmonary tumors, lung abscesses, pulmonary bullae, pulmonary tuberculomas, destroyed lung, etc.), esophageal diseases (benign and malignant esophageal tumors, hiatal hernia, etc.), benign and malignant mediastinal tumors (thymoma, retrosternal goiter, pericardial cysts, neurofibromas, lipomas, etc.), pleural diseases (pneumothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, malignant pleural effusion, etc.), chest trauma (rib fractures, sternal fractures, flail chest, hemopneumothorax, pulmonary contusion and laceration, traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, etc.), chest wall tumors, hyperhidrosis, benign and malignant breast tumors, benign and malignant thyroid tumors, etc. The staff have extensive diagnostic and treatment experience in both traditional thoracic surgery and minimally invasive endoscopic surgery. The surgical treatment outcomes for lung cancer and esophageal cancer are at an advanced level within the province. Day surgery treatment is also provided for small pulmonary nodules, hyperhidrosis, and other conditions. The discipline adheres to the concepts of patient-centered care, caring with heart, and serving the people, and strives to provide every patient with high-quality medical services. The vigorous cardiothoracic surgery and chest wall surgery medical team Common diseases treated by Cardiothoracic Surgery: (1) Pulmonary diseases: small pulmonary nodules, benign and malignant pulmonary tumors, lung abscesses, pulmonary bullae, pulmonary tuberculomas, destroyed lung, etc. (2) Esophageal diseases: benign and malignant esophageal tumors, hiatal hernia, etc. Our department has accumulated extensive treatment experience in traditional open surgery and combined thoracoscopic-laparoscopic minimally invasive surgery for benign and malignant tumors in all segments of the esophagus. Postoperative recovery is rapid, and treatment outcomes are at an advanced level within the province. (3) Benign and malignant mediastinal tumors: thymoma, retrosternal goiter, pericardial cysts, neurofibromas, lipomas, etc.; (4) Pleural diseases: ruptured pulmonary bullae accompanied by pneumothorax, pleural effusion, empyema, malignant pleural effusion, etc.; (5) Chest trauma: rib fractures, sternal fractures, flail chest, hemopneumothorax, pulmonary contusion and laceration, traumatic diaphragmatic hernia, etc. Minimally invasive thoracoscopic lung repair/resection and internal fixation of rib fractures with steel plates, or thoracotomy, are used for treatment (depending on the condition). (6) Chest wall tumors: various chest wall tumors originating from the bony thorax and soft tissues of the chest wall; (7) Hyperhidrosis: palmar sweating and axillary sweating (bromhidrosis). A 5-mm small-incision ultra-minimally invasive thoracic sympathetic chain cauterization procedure is performed. The surgery is safe and rapid, produces immediate results, and patients are discharged on the same day as surgery.
