Critical Care Medicine
The Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM) of Guangdong Second People’s Hospital was formally established in November 2006. Our department grew and developed alongside colleagues at major hospitals throughout the province and has maintained close collaborative relationships with them. The ward covers 1,800 square meters, has a relatively appropriate layout, and has an admission capacity of 26 beds. As a key emergency medical rescue unit prioritized for development in Guangdong Province, the Department of Critical Care Medicine plays an important role in the hospital’s discipline development and is an important support platform for the hospital’s academic exchanges and the implementation of new technologies. After years of development and training, the department has strong technical capabilities; all medical and nursing staff possess registered professional training qualifications in critical care, and there are 70 professional medical and nursing staff. Lifelong continuing education and intensive learning are essential conditions for the work and professional growth of critical-care medical and nursing staff. Standardized diagnosis and treatment and deep compassionate care are characteristics of the department’s work. The department is fully equipped and has reached an advanced level in the current field of critical care medicine. Its equipment includes ECMO (currently the most advanced model in China), Prismaflex hemofiltration machines, Asahi Kasei hemofiltration machines, Fresenius hemofiltration machines, various mid- and high-range ventilators (PB840, DragerXL, Siemens, and others), bedside DR equipment, ultrasound machines of various models (color Doppler), defibrillation and cardiac-pacing equipment, a Pentax fiberoptic bronchoscope, a JHBP-2000 single-pump hemofiltration machine, air-filtration equipment, syringe pumps, infusion pumps, enteral-nutrition pumps, and other equipment. Bedside point-of-care testing (POCT) is comprehensively performed, including blood-gas analysis, electrolytes, PCT, cardiac markers, and other tests. The department’s services cover all current fields of critical care medicine, with difficult and severe critical-care diagnosis and treatment and organ-function support as its specialties, including blood purification (CRRT, plasma exchange, hemoperfusion), various forms of respiratory support, and hemodynamic monitoring by multiple methods. More than 1,300 patients are admitted annually. Critically ill patients transferred over long distances from other hospitals using mobile ICU technology account for more than 10% each year, producing a favorable influence and broad reach in areas surrounding our hospital and in many parts of the province. The department supports the performance of clinical procedures for the vast majority of high-risk patients in our hospital, assists other hospitals in developing new services and conducting clinical consultations, and has a critical-patient rescue success rate of more than 85%. The most advanced medical scientific theories and practices in every specialty constantly influence the development of critical care medicine. The Department of Critical Care Medicine of Guangdong Second People’s Hospital targets the latest technological developments worldwide in every medical specialty and holds a certain academic standing and influence among its peers in the province. Director Xing Rui leads the team on rounds, addressing the special circumstances of critically ill patients; Head Nurse Wu Li carefully explains key nursing points to the nurses. As a comprehensive emergency medical unit prioritized for development in Guangdong Province, Guangdong Second People’s Hospital targets the development of new technologies worldwide in every medical specialty, and the Department of Critical Care Medicine plays an important supporting role in enabling every specialty of the hospital to develop new technologies. Advanced medical scientific theories and practices in every specialty constantly influence the development of critical care medicine, making our Department of Critical Care Medicine an important platform for academic exchange within the hospital. The hospital’s various high-technology products are continually put into clinical use, greatly expanding the diagnostic and treatment methods of critical care medicine. A group of medical personnel with a strong sense of professional dedication and responsibility are using their abilities and youth to build the hospital’s brand and their own honor. We all greatly enjoy this challenging medical specialty. The value of a scientifically rigorous perioperative assessment enables the complex surgery and interventional treatment of high-risk patients to proceed smoothly. The professional philosophy of cooperation and service has enabled the Department of Critical Care Medicine to establish a green corridor for rescuing critically ill patients that encompasses every department of the hospital. Thoughtful, meticulous service and careful, detailed analysis can accurately identify the evolution of the illness, making monitoring and treatment more humane and treatment plans individualized. Correct judgment and rational medication use are manifestations of scientific literacy and serve the fundamental interests of patients. The various guidelines developed from evidence-based medicine provide patients and doctors with a sound basis for making choices, but the fundamental means of determining treatment choices remain the additional work performed without regard to compensation, painstaking study day after day, genuine care, and a strong sense of social responsibility. Serious and thorough observation of the patient’s condition is the fundamental guarantee of medical safety; truly considerate and meticulous nursing care is the ultimate manifestation of the cumulative effect of successful treatment. This is a ward of deep compassionate care! Therefore, patients admitted to the Department of Critical Care Medicine are safe. New technologies can be fully developed here, and new medical concepts can also be put into practice here; therefore, the Department of Critical Care Medicine is also a required course for medical personnel seeking to improve their professional capabilities. Patients in the Department of Critical Care Medicine come from every department of the hospital and have various diseases and clinical syndromes, including various high-risk perioperative patients, severe craniocerebral injury, cerebral hemorrhage, respiratory failure, flail chest, severe acute pancreatitis, cardiopulmonary-cerebral resuscitation, acute myocardial infarction, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), various types of cardiac failure, various types of shock, severe sepsis, multiple organ dysfunction syndrome (MODS), severe trauma, multiple trauma, combined trauma, acute severe organophosphate-pesticide poisoning, drowning, heatstroke, electrical shock injuries, and others. Because all these patients share common characteristics, they require strong life support. Continually innovating science and technology and a contradictory social transformation are profoundly affecting the development of medical technology and the transformation of healthcare models. We work hard to learn, continually improve ourselves, and will certainly keep pace with the development of the times. We are still working hard! We not only admit critically ill patients but also accept the challenge of H7N9: We receive casualties from emergency events: Our team:
