Neurosurgery
The Department of Neurosurgery of Guangdong Second Provincial General Hospital (Civil Aviation Campus) is a specialized department integrating clinical diagnosis and treatment, emergency care, scientific research, and teaching. It primarily serves patients in Baiyun District and surrounding areas, with distinctive strengths particularly in cerebrovascular diseases, craniocerebral trauma, and cranial nerve disorders. The department is staffed by an experienced team of specialists. It currently has 28 medical and nursing staff members, including 2 with senior professional titles, 1 with an intermediate professional title, 3 with junior professional titles, and 22 nursing staff members, providing patients with high-quality neurosurgical diagnosis and treatment services.
I. Medical specialties The department focuses on “integrating emergency and chronic care and providing precise diagnosis and treatment,” and has developed four major areas of specialization: 1. Craniocerebral trauma: Relying on the emergency care system of the Civil Aviation Campus, the department receives patients with craniocerebral trauma 24 hours a day, including concussion, cerebral contusion and laceration, epidural hematoma, subdural hematoma, skull fracture, open brain injury, and brainstem injury. In conjunction with the intensive care unit (ICU), it provides integrated “emergency care-surgery-rehabilitation” management. 2. Craniocerebral tumors: The department specializes in minimally invasive neuroendoscopic and microscopic treatment and standardized surgery for various brain tumors, including glioma, meningioma, pituitary tumor, acoustic neuroma, intracranial metastatic tumor, pineal tumor, craniopharyngioma, schwannoma, cerebellar tumor, and brainstem tumor. Intraoperative navigation technology is used to improve the precision of tumor resection. 3. Cerebrovascular diseases: The department provides diagnosis and interventional and open surgical treatment for cerebral aneurysm, cerebral arteriovenous malformation, hypertensive intracerebral hemorrhage (hemorrhagic stroke), cerebral ischemic diseases (ischemic stroke), and carotid-cavernous fistula, among others. Hundreds of complex cerebrovascular operations are completed annually. 4. Other conditions: These include hydrocephalus, trigeminal neuralgia, glossopharyngeal neuralgia, intervertebral disc herniation, cervical spondylosis, congenital cerebral malformations, intracranial infection, and scalp masses, among others. Patient satisfaction is high.
II. Department overview 1. New services and new technologies Minimally invasive neurosurgical technology: The application of equipment such as neuroendoscopes and intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring systems enables “precise minimally invasive” treatment of diseases such as brain tumors and cerebral hemorrhage, reducing surgical trauma and shortening recovery time. Hybrid surgical technology: The department performs hybrid surgery for cerebrovascular diseases under DSA (digital subtraction angiography) guidance. By combining the advantages of microsurgery and interventional treatment, it precisely manages complex aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations, and other conditions. 2. Examination methods and equipment The department is equipped with a series of advanced devices, including: Germany ZEISS KV900 neurosurgical microscope: Provides a high-definition surgical field of view; KARL STORZ neuroendoscope: Supports resection of complex deep brain lesions; DSA angiography machine: Precisely diagnoses cerebrovascular diseases and provides real-time imaging guidance for interventional treatment; Intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring system: Monitors neurological function throughout the procedure and reduces the risk of surgical complications; 3 sets of Medtronic high-speed power systems, Huake navigation system, ultrasonic scalpel, and stereotactic head frame, among others: Meet the requirements of various craniocerebral surgeries and improve operational efficiency and safety. The department’s intensive care unit has introduced a variety of advanced medical rescue devices. It currently has multiparameter monitors, defibrillators, invasive ventilators, noninvasive ventilators, portable ventilators, cardiopulmonary resuscitation devices, infusion pumps, temperature-control devices, multifunctional emergency beds, and other emergency equipment, enabling multidimensional and precise treatment of critically ill patients.
III. Research achievements Responsible for 3 provincial- and municipal-level projects; published more than 10 academic papers in journals at various levels and obtained 1 utility patent; co-editor: “Minimally Invasive Treatment of Hypertensive Intracerebral Hemorrhage”; deputy lead translator: “Practical Guidelines for Endoscopic Transnasal Transsphenoidal Surgery.” Contributing translator: “Surgery of Lesions in the Cerebellopontine Angle,” “Atlas of Endoscopic Endonasal Sinus and Skull Base Surgery”; “Essentials of Functional Neurosurgery,” and others.
