Transfusion Medicine

[Overview] Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine established its blood bank as early as the 1980s, and officially established the Department of Blood Transfusion in July 2013. The Department of Blood Transfusion is currently the chairing institution of the Transfusion Medicine Professional Committee of the Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and a member institution of the Guangdong Transfusion Association. The Department of Blood Transfusion currently has 9 employees, including 7 master's graduate students (1 currently enrolled) and 2 bachelor's degree holders; 1 chief technician, 1 deputy chief technician, 6 supervising technicians, and 1 technician; 3 licensed physicians. [Department Features] The Department of Blood Transfusion places great emphasis on quality management, actively conducts internal quality control of transfusion compatibility testing, and participates in the external quality assessment activities organized by the Clinical Laboratory Center of the National Health Commission, so the PT score for the project reached 100 points. A standardized quality management system has been established, and the transfusion compatibility testing program has passed ISO 15189 laboratory accreditation. The department is equipped with a 伯乐IH-1000 fully automated blood grouping and crossmatching analyzer, an 奥森多ORTHO VISION MAX fully automated blood grouping and crossmatching analyzer, a 罗氏Cobas e602 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer, a 罗氏Cobas e411 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer, a Thermo Cryofuge 6000i large-capacity refrigerated centrifuge, a Haemonetics TEG5000 thromboelastograph, a 海尔HR1200-ⅡA2 biosafety cabinet, a 可成L3-5K centrifuge dedicated to platelet antibodies, a Fresenius heat sealer and a blood collection rocker, among other instruments and equipment. The services provided by the Department of Blood Transfusion include: Clinical transfusion: receipt, storage, and distribution of blood products, participation in the investigation and management of adverse transfusion reactions, clinical transfusion consultation and guidance on blood use, stored autologous blood collection, etc.; Laboratory testing: transfusion compatibility testing such as blood typing, irregular antibody screening, and crossmatching, difficult blood type testing and antibody identification, screening for transfusion-related infectious diseases, thromboelastography testing, platelet antibody (HLA and HPA) testing, etc. The department undertakes the teaching tasks for the courses “Blood Transfusion and Transfusion Technology” and “Experimental Diagnostics” for majors such as Medical Laboratory Technology and Traditional Chinese Medicine at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine. It receives more than 40 laboratory interns from universities nationwide every year. It has organized and hosted training courses on new technologies and advances for the Transfusion Medicine Professional Committee of the Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine many times. The department attaches importance to scientific research and in recent years has undertaken or participated in 6 scientific research projects at the provincial or ministerial level and above, and led 4 departmental or bureau-level projects; it has published more than 10 academic papers in “NUTRITION & METABOLISM”, “Annals of Clinical Biochemistry”, “Clinical Laboratory”, “Annals of Translational Medicine”, “中国输血杂志” and other SCI-indexed and professional journals, and has co-edited several monographs and transfusion textbooks. It has obtained 1 national invention patent, 2 second prizes and 1 third prize of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The Department of Blood Transfusion uses the Youth Civilization Unit as its platform, with “Passionate Youth, Warm-Hearted Service” as its departmental culture, actively participates in the hospital’s lean improvement and PDCA projects to improve clinical service; assists clinical departments in carrying out autologous blood collection and storage services, provides separation and purification services after bone marrow/stem cell collection, and is dedicated to serving clinical departments and patients.
