Brain Disease Functional Assessment and Treatment Department

Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine

【Overview】 The Department of Neurological Disorders and Function was established in May 2010. It is divided into 4 units: transcranial Doppler ultrasonography, electromyography, electroencephalography, and brain reflex therapy, covering the Dadeli Road Main Hospital, University Town Branch, Fangcun Branch, and Ersha Branch, the four hospital campuses. At present, the department has 16 staff members in total, including 11 physicians (2 with senior associate professional titles and 2 with intermediate professional titles) and 5 technicians (1 with an intermediate professional title). It possesses equipment assets worth over RMB 10 million, including 8 transcranial Doppler ultrasonography systems, 5 electromyographs, 7 long-term video electroencephalography systems (while also being responsible for interpreting the 13 long-term electroencephalography systems of the Epilepsy Center), 2 sensory threshold analyzers, 1 transcranial magnetic stimulator, and 8 brain reflex therapy devices, among other equipment. It is a deputy-chair institution of the Vascular Ultrasound Professional Committee of the National Health Commission’s Stroke Screening and Prevention and Treatment Project Committee. In April 2021, it officially launched South China’s first “Equipment Innovation Transformation R&D Base” and “Cerebral Blood Flow and Brain Function Testing Training Base”. In November 2021, it was designated by the Capacity Building and Continuing Education Center of the National Health Commission as the lead institution of the joint demonstration sub-center for vascular ultrasound (South China Region). 【Department Features】 The Department of Neurological Disorders and Function has two professional groups, vascular ultrasound and neuroelectrophysiology, and actively collaborates with clinical departments to foster multidisciplinary cooperation and coordinated development. The vascular ultrasound group was the earliest hospital in Guangdong Province to implement a comprehensive assessment model for head and neck vascular ultrasound. Its diagnostic level is leading in South China and ranks among the national front-runners. It is mainly dedicated to screening intracranial arterial stenosis and occlusion in ischemic cerebrovascular disease, preoperative and postoperative assessment of neurointerventional treatment, intraoperative cerebral blood flow monitoring, functional assessment in neurocritical care, the bubble test, determination of brain death, the supine-to-standing test, and assessment of cerebral blood flow autoregulation, among other services. The neuroelectrophysiology group is divided into the epilepsy group, critical care group, and electromyography group. The epilepsy group and critical care group are responsible for interpreting nearly 20 long-term video electroencephalography recordings. They are dedicated to the localization/qualitative diagnosis of epilepsy, etiological diagnosis and differential diagnosis of nonepileptic conditions, preoperative assessment and intraoperative monitoring for resection of epileptogenic lesions, assessment of the severity of brain injury and prognostic determination, assessment of epileptic seizures and the efficacy of antiepileptic medications, and guiding brain-protection treatment and prognostic prediction. They have developed advanced and technically demanding procedures, including stereotactic electroencephalography, postoperative assessment after lesioning, and functional localization under intraoperative awake conditions. The electromyography group currently performs routine testing for peripheral neuropathies, evoked potentials, quantitative sensory nerve testing, and intraoperative electrophysiological monitoring, with an emphasis on the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of motor neuron disease, entrapment peripheral neuropathies, hereditary neuropathies, and complex myopathies. It has led 3 research projects, led 4 collaborative research projects, and published 25 papers, including 7 SCI papers, with a cumulative impact factor of 17.436 points. It participated in compiling the 2020 “Expert Consensus on Several Issues in Head and Neck Vascular Ultrasound” and the 2021 “Guiding Standards for Vascular Ultrasound Examination for the Prevention and Treatment of Stroke in China”. It has won awards multiple times in difficult-case competitions at national cerebrovascular ultrasound forums (winning first, second, and third places, respectively). It promoted the “Spark Plan” lecture tour on vascular ultrasound in 11 cities in and around Guangdong. 【Specialist Technical Expertise】 钟经馨, Master of Medicine, director of the Department of Neurological Disorders and Function, an outstanding young and middle-aged expert of the National Health Commission’s Stroke Screening and Prevention and Treatment Project, visiting scholar at Prince of Wales Hospital of The Chinese University of Hong Kong, and member of an international stroke organization. She serves as deputy chair of the Vascular Ultrasound Professional Committee of the Expert Committee of the National Health Commission’s Stroke Screening and Prevention and Treatment Project, a member of the Cranial Ultrasound Professional Committee of the Chinese Association of Ultrasound in Engineering, deputy leader of the Cerebral Blood Flow Monitoring Group of the Neurointervention Professional Committee of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, a member of the Vascular Ultrasound Professional Committee of the China Branch of the National Vascular Alliance, a standing committee member of the Stroke Professional Committee of the Guangdong Society of Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine, and a standing committee member of the Parkinson’s Professional Committee of the Guangdong Society for Precision Medicine Applications. As a guiding expert for the National Health Commission’s Stroke Prevention and Treatment Project, she participated in on-site reviews and supervision of the construction of more than 30 stroke centers inside and outside the province, and participated in formulating the 2020 “Expert Consensus on Several Issues in Head and Neck Vascular Ultrasound” and the “Guiding Standards for Vascular Ultrasound Examination for the Prevention and Treatment of Stroke in China”. As first author and corresponding author, she has published 17 papers in core journals, including 5 SCI papers, with a cumulative impact factor of 11.458 points, and has co-edited 3 books. The department has strong technical expertise, and its influence is steadily expanding. Director 钟经馨 has been invited to deliver special lectures at the Chinese Stroke Conference for 6 consecutive years, has participated many times in national lecture tours on standardized vascular ultrasound techniques, has received the “Excellent Lecturer Award” and “Excellent Organization Award” of the “Stroke Screening and Prevention and Treatment Project”, and won first place in the difficult-case competition at the National Cerebrovascular Ultrasound Forum in 2015. Physician 莫秀云 won second prize in the 2019 National Medical Imaging Big Data Case Competition. 禤正正 won third prize in the difficult vascular ultrasound case competition at the 2021 Chinese Stroke Conference. The cerebral blood flow autoregulation research led by 张伟骏 is at a leading level in South China, and he was invited to give a special lecture entirely in English at the 10th International Conference on Cerebral Blood Flow Autoregulation. The department’s official account, “Vascular Ultrasound Brainstorm”, has published more than 200 original articles and has 11000 followers. Over the past 3 years, it has accepted more than 10 visiting physicians for further training each year.
