Fangcun Hospital Laboratory Medicine Department

Overview: The Fangcun Laboratory Department of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine was established in September 2003. It now serves as an important member of the Department of Laboratory Medicine of Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Chinese Medicine and is one of the first medical laboratories nationwide to receive ISO 15189 laboratory accreditation from the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment. The Laboratory Department of Fangcun Hospital has 20 professional and technical staff members, including 1 person with a doctoral degree, 9 with master’s degrees, 1 with a senior professional title, 5 with associate senior professional titles, and 1 master’s supervisor. The Laboratory Department focuses on professional development, has strong clinical service capabilities, and its workload has increased year by year. The department has 7 professional groups: outpatient/emergency laboratory testing, clinical body-fluid testing, clinical hematology testing, clinical biochemistry testing, clinical microbiology testing, clinical immunology testing, and clinical transfusion testing.

Department Features: The department conducts comprehensive internal quality control for all testing items and actively participates in external quality assessments organized by the Clinical Laboratory Center of the National Health Commission and the Guangdong Provincial Clinical Laboratory Center, covering routine biochemistry, blood lipids, blood gases, special proteins, dry biochemistry, clinical immunology, endocrinology, clinical microbiology, blood cell analysis, coagulation, urinalysis, molecular biology testing, and other items; the PT scores for at least 98% of the items reach 100 points.

The department is equipped with a Roche COBAS 8000 biochemical analyzer, a Johnson & Johnson Vitros 5,1 FS dry biochemistry analyzer, a Siemens Atellica immunochemiluminescence analyzer, a Roche COBAS e601 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer, a Roche COBAS e602 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer, a Roche COBAS e411 electrochemiluminescence immunoassay analyzer, a Japanese SYSMEX XN550 five-part hematology analyzer, a Japanese SYSMEX XE-5000 hematology analysis line, a Japanese SYSMEX CS5100 fully automated coagulation analyzer, a French bioMérieux BacT/ALERT 3D 240 blood culture analyzer, a French bioMérieux VITEK-2 fully automated microbiology analysis system, a German Kebao urine sediment analysis line, an Ortho fully automated blood-group analyzer, a Danish Radiometer ABL 800 blood gas analyzer, an HPLC-723G7 fully automated glycated hemoglobin analyzer, and other large-scale instruments and equipment, enabling it to provide accurate and timely laboratory reports for clinical practice.

Each year, it enrolls at least 1 master’s student in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics and accepts more than 10 interns. It undertakes the teaching of multiple specialized courses in the undergraduate Medical Laboratory Science program at Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and Director Xu Ning is the course leader for Laboratory Instrumentation.

The department places emphasis on research, with research directions including laboratory risk management, laboratory standardization, microbial pathogenic mechanisms of chronic infections in clinical practice, and research into the mechanisms of cellular senescence, among others. It has undertaken and participated in more than 10 projects at the national, provincial/ministerial, and department/bureau levels. It has applied for 2 national invention and utility model patents, published more than 50 academic papers in professional journals in China and abroad, served as editor-in-chief, deputy editor-in-chief, and contributing editor for multiple professional monographs, and received 2 second prizes and 2 third prizes of the Guangdong Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award. The Fangcun Laboratory Department is the chairing institution of the Laboratory Medicine Branch of the Guangdong Society of Urogenital Medicine, and Director Xu Ning serves as chairperson of the society.
