Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Clinic(越秀院区)
Basic information about the department: The Department of Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery operates across three campuses—Yuexiu, Panyu, and Tianhe—and currently has 2 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, and 5 resident physicians. In 1999, the Health Department of Guangdong Province established the “Guangdong Provincial Neonatal Hearing Screening, Diagnosis and Treatment Center” at our hospital. In 2018, our hospital was selected as one of the designated hospitals for surgery under the Guangdong Provincial Cochlear Implant Rehabilitation Assistance Project for Children with Hearing Disabilities. Our hospital is the only hospital in the entire province designated for and responsible for managing the Congenital Structural Malformation Assistance Project and can provide medical expense subsidies to impoverished children with congenital structural malformations of the ear, nose and throat, head and neck, and airway. Clinical work: There are currently 34 beds, approximately 90,000 outpatient visits per year, and more than 2,000 surgeries per year. The department has examination and surgical equipment for neonates, infants, and young children, and each of its 4 subspecialties has distinctive features and strengths: 1. Otology subspecialty: audiological diagnosis and treatment and rehabilitation for children and adults with hearing impairment, hearing-aid fitting, and cochlear implantation; to date, it has successfully performed cochlear implantation surgery in children with extremely severe hearing impairment and associated malformations including bilateral Mondini malformation, bilateral internal auditory canal stenosis, bilateral common-cavity malformation of the inner ear, cochlear ossification, and other malformations. 2. Rhinology subspecialty: neonates, infants, and young children with congenital choanal atresia or nasal stenosis are referred to our department from across the country for diagnosis and treatment; the youngest patient was 8 days old; cases include bony atresia, some with associated anterior nares malformations, congenital absence of the ethmoid bone, Pierre Robin syndrome, and others. 3. Pharyngeal/laryngeal and esophageal/tracheal subspecialty: removal of foreign bodies from the esophagus, trachea, and bronchi; low-temperature plasma ablation technology; comprehensive treatment of congenital laryngomalacia; supraglottoplasty for severe laryngomalacia, scar excision for laryngotracheal stenosis, and other procedures; it was a pioneer in China in performing reduction of cricoarytenoid joint dislocation in neonates and also collaborates with other departments to treat tracheomalacia using stents, among other treatments. 4. Head and neck subspecialty: diagnosis and treatment of head and neck tumors in infants and young children, children, and adults. 5. Clinical Hearing Center: fully equipped with advanced equipment, serving all age groups, from neonates, infants, and young children through adults to older adults. 6. Sleep Center: has sleep-related breathing monitoring equipment. Department team: our department is the lead institution of the Guangdong Provincial Women and Children’s Health Specialty Alliance–Children’s Otorhinolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery Specialty Alliance, the chairing institution of the Children’s Hearing Health Professional Committee of the Guangdong Maternal and Child Health Association, an outstanding institution for hearing screening for the prevention and treatment of deafness in Guangdong Province, the Guangdong Provincial Training Base for Endoscopic Diagnosis and Treatment Techniques in Laryngology under “Medical Technologies Restricted for Clinical Application,” and the Chinese Medical Doctor Association Training Base for Pediatric Respiratory Endoscopists.
