Pain Medicine（越秀院区）

The Pain Department of Guangdong Women’s and Children’s Hospital was established in May 2019. From its initial staffing of 1 physician and 1 nurse, the department has developed into an outstanding, young, and dynamic team currently comprising 5 physicians, 1 nurse, 1 technician, and 2 nursing assistants. Annual outpatient visits have grown from 1409 to more than 10,000, and the population served has expanded from Panyu District alone to the surrounding cities of the Pearl River Delta; in 2023, pain diagnosis and treatment services were also added at the Yuexiu campus to meet patients’ growing demand for services. At the same time, we have continued to train personnel for pain diagnosis and treatment at the Qingyuan campus and are responsible for pain diagnosis and treatment consultations (MDT) at the Tianhe campus. During the department’s 5 years of development, it formed a specialty alliance with the Pain Department of the Second People’s Hospital of Guangdong Province, supported the launch of the Pain Department of Luoding Maternal and Child Health Hospital of Guangdong Province, became a designated institution of the Guangzhou Physical Therapy Association, and in 2024 became an institutional member of IASP (International Association for the Study of Pain), significantly enhancing our department’s influence within the province and nationally and internationally. In education and research, our department has completed teaching assignments for dozens of postgraduate students in anesthesiology and pain medicine and socially recruited trainees undergoing standardized residency training, accepted 6 doctors for long- and short-term further training, and made every effort to continuously provide talent for the pain specialty; in 2019-2020, the department undertook a training program for visiting trainees from a hospital in Ghana, Africa, bringing traditional and new approaches to pain diagnosis and treatment to Ghana, Africa; in 2024, the department’s leader, Chief Physician Huang Xizhao, was appointed a supervisor of master’s students at Guangzhou Medical University. The Pain Department’s distinctive services include visualized pain diagnosis and treatment, precise soft-tissue and biomechanical assessment, visualized small-needle-knife therapy, injection therapy, and regenerative medicine therapies. Based on the composition of this hospital’s patient population, in addition to common pain conditions related to degenerative diseases in middle-aged and older adults, our department has also developed, for specific populations, a physical therapy program combining Chinese and Western medical approaches for pain conditions in pregnant and postpartum women, breastfeeding women, and adolescents. In the future, the department will move toward a new pattern that integrates research and clinical practice, exerts influence both within and outside the profession, and develops domestically and internationally in tandem.
