Clinical Laboratory Center(越秀院区)
The Clinical Laboratory Center (including the Department of Transfusion) of Guangdong Women’s and Children’s Hospital was established in 1985 and was one of the first medical-technical departments established during the hospital’s initial period of establishment. Since its establishment, the department has developed into a comprehensive clinical laboratory integrating Party building, medical care, teaching, and scientific research. The department has consistently adhered to the quality policy of “accurate, efficient, scientific, and impartial”; in accordance with ISO15189, the Accreditation Criteria for the Quality and Competence of Medical Laboratories, it has established a complete and efficient quality management system and obtained ISO15189 medical laboratory accreditation. The department is a “Four-Strength” Party branch of the directly affiliated organs of the provincial health authorities and was selected for the “14th Five-Year Plan” Guangdong Provincial Clinical Key Specialty Construction Project. The department currently has 79 professional and technical personnel, including 9 chief technologists, 35 deputy chief technologists, 27 supervising technologists, and 16 laboratory physicians; it has 8 PhD holders, 29 master’s degree holders, and 42 bachelor’s degree holders, including 1 supervisor for collaborative postdoctoral training, 1 doctoral supervisor, and 7 master’s supervisors. The total laboratory area of the Panyu, Yuexiu, and Tianhe campuses of the Clinical Laboratory Center reaches 5,000 square meters. Specialized laboratories include clinical basic laboratory testing and hematology testing, clinical immunology testing, clinical biochemistry testing, clinical microbiology testing, a clinical mass spectrometry laboratory (toxicology testing laboratory), and the Department of Transfusion, among others. Among these, the toxicology testing laboratory, which serves as the Guangdong Provincial Children’s Poisoning Treatment Center, is also the first toxicology and drug mass spectrometry testing laboratory in China’s maternal and child health system. The laboratories are equipped with a series of advanced instruments and equipment: a Shenzhen Mindray fully automated blood cell analysis line, a Roche fully automated biochemical and immunoassay line, a Werfen fully automated coagulation line, a vaginal microecology analysis system, a fully automated blood matching and blood group analysis instrument, an Abbott fully automated chemiluminescence analyzer, a fully automated enzyme immunoassay analyzer by 艾德康, a fully automated immunofluorescence analyzer by 海柯, a EUROIMMUN fully automated immunoblot analyzer, a fully automated bacterial culture system, a fully automated blood culture analyzer, a fully automated anaerobic and microaerophilic detection system, a fully automated rapid biological mass spectrometry detection system, a fully automated bacterial identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing system, liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry, gas chromatography–mass spectrometry, plasma mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectroscopy detection systems, and others, providing reliable clinical testing and research services inside and outside the hospital. At present, the center conducts more than 350 testing items, and the annual total number of tests exceeds 20 million. With patient safety in medical care as its focus, the Clinical Laboratory Center has established an integrated emergency laboratory testing management model encompassing functional departments, clinical departments, transport, laboratories, and an information network (MCTLI). The department stays closely focused on the characteristics of maternal and child health care and closely aligned with the direction of clinical development; on the basis of routine testing items, it has developed a series of specialized examination items in line with the development of specialized diseases in the gynecology, obstetrics, pediatrics, and neonatology departments of our hospital: the gynecology series includes gynecological tumors, reproductive tract infections, and endocrine diseases; the obstetrics series includes metabolic diseases during pregnancy, monitoring of critically ill pregnant and postpartum women, and extended postpartum services; the pediatrics series includes inherited metabolic diseases, hematological diseases, respiratory and immune diseases, obesity-related metabolic problems, endocrine diseases, growth and development and nutrition monitoring, and monitoring items for high-risk newborns; transfusion-related testing items include routine pre-transfusion testing, prenatal blood group serological tests, ABO hemolytic disease of the newborn testing, antibody screening tests, antiglobulin tests, and platelet-rich plasma collection and preparation (PRP), among others. The Clinical Laboratory Center is a master’s-degree training site in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics at Guangzhou Medical University, doctoral training sites in Clinical Medicine at Guangzhou Medical University and Jinan University, a postdoctoral collaborative training site of the Guangdong Provincial Postdoctoral Innovation Practice Base, a Laboratory Medicine specialty base at a national-level standardized residency training base—one of the first batch nationwide—and clinical practice bases for several medical colleges in the province; it also undertakes the teaching of the undergraduate course “Clinical Communication Skills” at the KingMed School of Laboratory Medicine of Guangzhou Medical University. Since being recognized in 2014 as a national-level standardized residency training base, the Clinical Laboratory Center has consistently adhered to the development philosophy of “coordination between medical care and education, with people-oriented training as the foundation” and has built a multi-level, three-dimensional talent training system. In teaching and training, the department has recruited a total of 26 standardized residency trainees, 16 of whom have completed training and successfully taken positions at well-known tertiary Grade A hospitals inside and outside the province. The department trains more than 40 interns each year, laying a solid foundation for medical students specializing in laboratory medicine to enter clinical practice. Over the past five years, it has received more than 40 advanced-study trainees from Guangdong Province and neighboring provinces, covering such professional areas as laboratory management, microbiology testing, hematology testing, immunology testing, and biochemical testing. Over the past five years, the department has achieved a series of scientific research results: it has obtained 36 research projects at the national, provincial, departmental/bureau, and other levels; published 28 SCI papers as first or corresponding author, including 12 with an impact factor above 5, with a cumulative impact factor of nearly 140; published more than 80 Chinese-language papers; and applied for 4 patents, of which 2 invention patents and 1 utility model patent have been granted. Department personnel have served a total of 25 times as deputy chairpersons, standing committee members, committee members, and in other roles in national-, provincial-, and municipal-level academic societies. The Clinical Laboratory Center keeps pace with the needs of the times and responds to the national call; it is responsible for implementing multiple general projects of the province’s maternal and child health system, serves as the lead organization for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of HIV, syphilis, and hepatitis B in Guangdong Province, and led the drafting of the Laboratory Management Plan for Eliminating Mother-to-Child Transmission of HIV, Syphilis, and Hepatitis B in Guangdong Province. It also regularly visits primary-level areas to guide relevant medical institutions throughout the province in carrying out quality control of laboratory testing for the “three diseases”; every year it regularly holds a provincial continuing education course—the specialized training in laboratory techniques for eliminating mother-to-child transmission of the “three diseases”—training more than 6,000 person-times of laboratory technical personnel from “three diseases” testing laboratories in maternal and child health care institutions and midwifery institutions at all levels in the province. The center led the implementation of the Guangdong Provincial Interlaboratory Quality Assessment for Clinical Laboratory Testing in Premarital and Pre-pregnancy Health Care, improving the comparability of test results from laboratories involved in this program throughout the province and further promoting the standardization of management of Guangdong Province’s comprehensive birth-defect prevention and control project. In addition, our center established a specialty alliance for maternal and child health laboratory testing with the laboratory departments of more than 30 women’s and children’s hospitals throughout the province, built an online communication platform for laboratory staff, clinicians, and nurses in the province’s maternal and child health system, and truly achieved “zero-distance contact” with maternal and child laboratory professionals throughout the province. The Clinical Laboratory Center places emphasis on department culture; to foster a united, collaborative, proactive work style and a positive atmosphere, it regularly organizes team-building activities each year to strengthen team cohesion. All employees uphold the hospital mission of “putting people’s health at the center and serving the health of women and children wholeheartedly,” practice the service theme of “quality safeguards the health of women and children, and services revolve around patients’ needs,” and work hard to provide accurate, efficient, and high-quality laboratory testing services to the many women and children in Guangdong Province and surrounding areas.
