The Department of Ophthalmology of Guangdong Women and Children Medical Center is a comprehensive ophthalmology department specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases in newborns, infants and young children, and adolescents, as well as myopia prevention and control, while also providing diagnosis and treatment for adult eye diseases. It is an eye-health management team integrating medical care, scientific research and teaching. It is one of the partner institutions of the Ophthalmology Management Branch of the Guangdong Medical Industry Association. It has two specialty centers: the Center for Prevention and Treatment of Pediatric Eye Diseases and the Guangdong Center for Prevention and Treatment of Retinal Diseases. It currently has 20 professional and technical personnel, including 1 chief physician, 4 deputy chief physicians, 2 deputy chief nurses, 8 attending physicians, 1 nurse-in-charge, 2 resident physicians, 1 technician and 1 assistant nurse.

At the Qingyuan Campus, the Department of Ophthalmology provides outpatient services only; at the Panyu Campus and Yuexiu Campus, it provides both outpatient and inpatient services. Day-surgery centers are established at the Yuexiu Campus and Tianhe Campus, where admission, surgery and discharge procedures are completed within 24 hours, providing rapid surgical diagnosis and treatment services.

Services currently provided include outpatient diagnosis and treatment of ophthalmic diseases for all age groups, eye and vision care for children, surgical treatment of eye diseases in newborns and children, myopia prevention and control for children and adolescents, surgical treatment of certain adult eye diseases, and remote medical consultations. The Yuexiu Campus and Tianhe Campus have optometry and eyeglass fitting centers that can perform fitting of spectacles and orthokeratology lenses, as well as amblyopia training.

The department’s level of diagnosis and treatment for eye diseases in newborns, infants, young children, children and adolescents is among the best in the province. It has conducted particularly in-depth exploration and accumulated extensive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, strabismus, amblyopia, anisometropia, ptosis, retinopathy of prematurity, congenital eye diseases and neonatal eye diseases. It has completed a number of national- and provincial-level key scientific research projects and publicly published its findings.

The department has established the Guangdong Women and Children Medical Center Children and Adolescents Myopia Prevention Science Popularization Volunteer Service Team, which disseminates and promotes science-based knowledge on myopia prevention and control and the prevention and treatment of pediatric eye diseases through various media. Every year, it regularly conducts the 0–6-Year-Old Children’s Eye Health and Vision Screening Training Course and the Guangdong Training Course on Prevention and Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity and Screening for Neonatal Blinding Eye Diseases, popularizing and improving knowledge and capabilities related to children’s eye health and the prevention and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity among cities and prefectures in Guangdong Province.

As a key specialty of Guangdong Women and Children Medical Center, the Center for Prevention and Treatment of Retinopathy of Prematurity possesses internationally advanced diagnostic and treatment equipment and technologies. It provides high-quality diagnostic and treatment services for patients with retinopathy of prematurity and neonatal eye diseases, greatly reduces the rate of blindness, and has trained a large number of full-time or part-time professional specialists for Guangdong, Guangxi, Hainan, Fujian and other provinces.

The department currently has numerous advanced examination and treatment devices: a neonatal wide-field retinal imaging system (including angiography), an ultra-wide-field (200°) fundus laser scanning instrument, a combined phacoemulsification and vitrectomy machine, a high-definition anterior and posterior segment ophthalmic surgical microscope, a fundus photography and angiography system, an optical coherence tomography scanner OCT, high-resolution blood-flow OCT (OCTA), an ophthalmic optical biometer IOL Master, an ocular surface comprehensive analyzer, a slit-lamp microscope imaging system, non-contact tonometers (handheld and tabletop), an autorefractor, a streak retinoscope, a refractive screening instrument, an automated perimeter, an amblyopia treatment instrument, a synoptophore, a direct ophthalmoscope, multiple models of binocular indirect ophthalmoscopes, a HEINZ video indirect ophthalmoscope, an ophthalmic A/B ultrasound system, a keratometer, a corneal endothelial microscope, a 532 semiconductor laser treatment instrument, an 810 semiconductor laser treatment instrument, etc.
