Laboratory Medicine

The Clinical Laboratory Department of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University is a modern medical laboratory center integrating medical care, teaching and scientific research, with a clear legal status; it is among the first batch of key disciplines of the First Affiliated Hospital of Xiamen University. It has now established specialties including outpatient and emergency (clinical body fluids) testing, clinical hematology testing, clinical biochemistry testing, clinical immunology testing, clinical microbiology testing and special testing (clinical molecular biology testing and clinical genetics testing). Equipped with first-class large-scale laboratory instruments and high-caliber laboratory professionals, it is able to provide patients with timely and accurate testing services. At the same time, our department has built a high-level, multi-tiered teaching and research team, including 1 professor, 2 associate professors, 5 assistant professors and 7 teaching assistants, among whom 1 is a doctoral supervisor and 3 are master's supervisors. Our department has obtained more than 30 scientific research projects at national, provincial-ministerial, municipal and joint horizontal levels, and has been awarded the title of Advanced Unit for Bacterial Resistance Monitoring by the Ministry of Health. It undertakes the training of master's students in Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics for Xiamen University, Fujian Medical University and Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the undergraduate teaching of Fundamentals of Clinical Laboratory Science and Laboratory Diagnostics, as well as clinical internships for laboratory majors from many universities. Our department currently has more than seventy professional technicians, including 7 chief technologists (4 employed), 23 associate chief technologists (17 employed), 25 supervisors-in-charge (24 employed) and 3 technologists, among whom 32 hold master's or doctoral degrees; there is also 1 nurse-in-charge and 18 phlebotomy clerks. Adhering to the quality policy of "benevolent heart and benevolent skill, quality service, exquisite accuracy, utmost sincerity and perfection", the department has continuously achieved excellent results in global, Ministry of Health and provincial inter-laboratory quality assessments; it can provide 24-hour emergency laboratory services, with a complete range of test items and the ability to provide all laboratory tests required by the medical standards of a Grade III Grade A general hospital. As a Fujian Province "Youth Civilization Unit", our department is a laboratory team consisting mainly of young people, full of vigor and enterprise. With the goal of striving to create "first-class service, first-class management, first-class talent and first-class performance", we persist in "linking science and technology with testing, pursuing service quality in parallel, with benevolence in our youth and benevolent skill showing our mettle". While completing a large amount of heavy routine clinical work with high quality and high efficiency, our department has set the development direction of each sub-discipline, continuously launches new test items to serve clinical needs, strengthens the links and communication between the laboratory and clinical departments, and founded the country's first Journal of Laboratory Physicians. It took the lead in the country in filing laboratory test items covering all fields of clinical testing, all of which have passed accreditation under the international standard ISO 15189 (Medical Laboratories — Quality and Competence), becoming the first medical laboratory in Fujian Province accredited under ISO 15189. It assisted the hospital in successfully passing the HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 and international JCI accreditation, making it the first general hospital in the country to be a "double" winner by passing both HIMSS EMRAM Stage 7 and international JCI accreditation. We are willing, with strict management, advanced technology and first-class academic standards and with the customer at the center, to wholeheartedly provide the highest quality and fastest laboratory services to clinical medical staff and patients.
