Anaesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University was established in 1957. It is the only National Key Clinical Specialty in Anesthesiology in Chongqing and a dual key development unit for both a National Key Clinical Specialty and a Chongqing Municipal Key Medical Discipline; it is also the host/supporting institution on which the Chongqing Medical Quality Control Center for Anesthesiology is based. As a training base for directors of anesthesiology departments in primary hospitals under the Chinese Society of Anesthesiology, one of seven specialized anesthesia training bases, including trauma and emergency anesthesia, a training base for comfort-oriented medical care of the Chinese Association of Anesthesiologists, and a demonstration unit for standardized management of day-surgery anesthesia of the Chinese Society of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, the department has always adhered to ensuring perioperative safety through anesthesia quality control, using innovative technologies to break through prohibited areas in surgical anesthesia, and improving patients’ surgical outcomes through the translation of clinical research technologies. At present, it has successfully provided anesthesia for open-heart surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass, ECMO, major vascular transplantation, major liver and kidney organ transplantation, and da Vinci robotic surgery, as well as emergency treatment and resuscitation for critically ill patients. It also widely provides various types of outpatient anesthesia and painless procedures, including painless endoscopy, painless induced abortion, painless oocyte retrieval, and nonconvulsive electroconvulsive therapy. It performs an average of 140,000 surgical anesthesia cases annually, maintaining an anesthesia-related mortality rate below 1/800,000 and a 99.8% treatment success rate for critically ill surgical patients. It has ranked first in Chongqing in anesthesia quality control for 10 consecutive years. Its surgical safety and anesthesia quality control are among the best in China, making it the largest surgical platform with the highest level of safety management in the upper reaches of the Yangtze River.

The Department of Anesthesiology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University is a modern first-class clinical department integrating medical care, education, and research. It currently comprises three campuses. The main campus has 34 operating rooms and 14 PACU beds; the Jinshan campus has 9 operating rooms and 11 PACU beds; and the First Branch has 10 operating rooms and 7 PACU beds. The department currently has 96 anesthesiologists and more than 200 operating-room nurses, including 8 chief physicians, 17 associate chief physicians, 2 doctoral supervisors, and 17 master’s supervisors.

Over the past 5 years, it has consistently ranked among the top 3 specialties in Southwest China in the Fudan version of the China Hospital Best Specialty Ranking. It has published more than 500 papers, including over 100 SCI-indexed papers, received funding for 51 research projects at the provincial- or ministerial level and above, and won 4 scientific research achievement awards at the provincial- or ministerial level and above. The department currently has 1 Chongqing Talent—Distinguished Teacher and Expert, 1 Chongqing Chief Medical Expert, 1 Chongqing Medical Leading Talent, 1 Chongqing Academic and Technical Leader, 1 reserve Chongqing Academic and Technical Leader, and 3 reserve high-level young and middle-aged medical professionals in Chongqing.

The Department of Anesthesiology has always pursued the goals of ensuring perioperative safety and improving patients’ surgical outcomes, with the aim of providing patients with comprehensive, multidisciplinary comfort-oriented medical services. It is at the forefront in China in enhanced postoperative recovery, extracorporeal life support, and the treatment of critical and emergency conditions.
