Since its establishment, the department has consistently upheld the concept of whole-person health management and has gradually developed a disciplinary framework grounded in clinical diagnosis and treatment, centered on education and talent development, and driven by scientific research and innovation. It is committed to building a demonstration platform for general practice aligned with international standards. The department is a national standardized training base for general practice residents and an authorized degree-granting site for doctoral and master's students in general practice; it is the leading institution of the Primary Healthcare Workers Branch of the Chongqing Medical Doctors Association and the leading institution of the Sichuan–Chongqing General Practice Alliance; it is also a China Hypertension Center, a China Heart Failure Center, a Chongqing Science Popularization Base for Chronic Disease and Rehabilitation Promotion, a Scientific Research Collaboration Center of the China Primary Healthcare Research Collaboration Network, and the deputy chair institution of the Chongqing General Practice Nursing Specialty Alliance.
The department has complete hardware facilities, with 40 designated beds and 4 standardized outpatient consultation rooms, including 2 teaching outpatient rooms, as well as fully equipped teaching facilities. It is equipped with advanced medical devices, including noninvasive ventilators, high-flow respiratory humidification therapy devices, defibrillator monitors, multifunctional monitors, and insulin infusion pumps, providing solid hardware support for clinical diagnosis and treatment and patient rehabilitation while creating a comfortable healthcare environment.
The talent structure is well balanced and the department has strong professional capabilities. It has formed a highly qualified medical team composed of senior experts, academic leaders, and outstanding young and mid-career professionals. The department currently has 35 employees, including 11 physicians and 18 nurses; 4 hold senior professional titles and 9 hold intermediate professional titles; 5 have doctoral degrees and 8 have master's degrees. The team possesses strong capabilities in clinical diagnosis and treatment, medical education, and scientific research and innovation, and includes 3 doctoral supervisors, 4 master's supervisors, 1 academic adviser, and 1 jointly appointed professor. Several experts have been selected for provincial- and municipal-level talent programs. The team is a core force in general practice clinical care and medical education in the region, providing a solid talent foundation for disciplinary development and the improvement of healthcare service quality.
As a pioneer and practitioner of the integrated medical care model, the department breaks down traditional specialty barriers and deeply integrates high-quality in-hospital medical resources with core specialty technologies. Guided by the concept of whole-person health management, it has established a modern healthcare service platform covering preventive care, precise health-risk assessment, comprehensive analysis and etiological determination of complex symptoms, and full-cycle management of chronic diseases. The department focuses on four distinctive areas: early identification and precise intervention for health risks; full-cycle management of respiratory diseases; integrated prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases; and standardized diagnosis and treatment of endocrine and metabolic diseases. It carries out advanced diagnostic and treatment technologies, including ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, ambulatory electrocardiographic monitoring, real-time remote electrocardiographic monitoring, continuous glucose monitoring, intensive insulin pump therapy, and pulmonary function testing, providing professional technical support for the precise diagnosis and individualized treatment of chronic diseases. The department currently includes subspecialties such as general practice comorbidity management, general practice chronic disease and health management, and diagnosis and treatment of difficult undifferentiated diseases. It operates diverse subspecialty outpatient services, including a comprehensive chronic disease clinic, a chronic disease follow-up clinic, and an undifferentiated disease clinic, comprehensively meeting the diverse, whole-life-cycle general healthcare needs of residents in the region.
In education and teaching, the department serves as the Department of General Practice Teaching and Research of the First Clinical Medical College of Chongqing Medical University and is a core component of the Chongqing General Practice Education Center. It has established a full-chain talent development system covering standardized residency training, advanced training for general practitioners, transition training, undergraduate internships, and postgraduate education. It innovates the collaborative training model of “general hospitals–primary communities,” deeply integrating theoretical teaching, clinical practice, and primary-level services, and continuously exploring new models for training general practice professionals. It provides a continuous supply of high-quality professionals for the development of the national primary healthcare service system.
The department actively implements the health and healthcare integration development strategy of the Chengdu–Chongqing Twin-City Economic Circle. It took the lead in establishing the Sichuan–Chongqing General Practice Specialty Alliance, bringing together more than 70 medical institutions at all levels in Sichuan and Chongqing to jointly build a cross-regional general healthcare collaboration platform. The alliance focuses on addressing industry challenges, including the uneven distribution of general healthcare resources within the region, substantial regional differences in primary-level service capacity, and mechanisms for intercity collaboration that remain to be improved. It promotes the downward transfer of high-quality medical resources across regions and supports the implementation of intercity hierarchical diagnosis and treatment and the development of Healthy Sichuan–Chongqing. With the mission of “resource sharing, complementary strengths, Sichuan–Chongqing coordination, coordinated quality development, and radiating leadership,” the alliance has established six collaborative systems covering intercity medical services, talent training, technology promotion, quality control, scientific research collaboration, and health management. It has opened a green channel for two-way intercity referrals between Sichuan and Chongqing, conducted cross-city rotation training for general practice professionals, promoted appropriate technologies, carried out joint research, and unified regional standards for general practice diagnosis, treatment, and quality control. Through multiple dimensions, including clinical technology, talent development, and scientific research collaboration, it comprehensively improves the capacity of primary-level general healthcare services throughout Sichuan and Chongqing and establishes a new cross-regional hierarchical diagnosis and treatment framework featuring “primary-level first-contact care, two-way referrals, separate management of acute and chronic diseases, and Sichuan–Chongqing coordination.”
At the same time, the department is deeply engaged in scientific research, innovation, and technology empowerment. It launched Chongqing’s first AI assistant for general practice diagnosis and treatment and implemented pilot applications in primary healthcare institutions. By transforming the mature diagnostic and treatment experience of tertiary A hospitals into accessible intelligent tools for primary care, it provides intelligent support for assisted differential diagnosis, report interpretation, and referral decision-making, helping improve the quality and efficiency of primary healthcare services and creating the “Chongqing model” of artificial intelligence empowering primary healthcare.
The Department of General Practice of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University has always interpreted responsibility through professionalism and driven development through innovation, and is committed to becoming a trustworthy guardian of your health throughout the entire life cycle!
