The Department of Orthopedics of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University has a long and glorious history，and under the new era and new challenges，all members of Orthopedics have lived up to history and the times，striving vigorously and acting steadfastly without slackening，and in recent years have made comprehensive efforts in medical care，education，and research，achieving substantial progress. Medical care: Orthopedics is a National Clinical Key Specialty，and Oncology (Bone Tumor Subspecialty) is a National Clinical Key Specialty，and it has 6 municipal-level medical centers，including the Chongqing Orthopedic Medical Quality Control Center，Joint Disease Research Center，Spine Surgery Diagnosis and Treatment Center，Hand Surgery Center，Trauma Center，and Cervical Spondylosis Clinical Diagnosis and Treatment Center. Orthopedics currently has 5 wards and 274 authorized beds；there are 154 medical personnel，including 49 physicians. The number of outpatient visits has exceeded 150,000，the number of discharges has approached 10,000，and there have been more than 9,000 operations. Orthopedics is characterized by such specialized technologies as minimally invasive artificial joint replacement，the diagnosis and treatment of artificial joint infections，robot-assisted orthopedic surgery，correction of complex spinal deformities，total en bloc spondylectomy and reconstruction for spinal tumors，surgical treatment of complex pelvic and acetabular fractures，arthroscopic repair of multiple ligaments，treatment of brachial plexus injuries，and nerve transfer surgery. Over the past 5 years，Orthopedics has participated in formulating 28 international and domestic guidelines/expert consensuses and has considerable international influence. Direction of innovation in medical models: the ERAS-MDT team treatment model of Orthopedics is at the national leading level；in 2017，it became a national “Demonstration Ward for Creating Perioperative Blood and Pain Management for Accelerated Recovery in Orthopedic Surgery”；in 2019，it was named by the National Health Commission as an “Innovative Department for Improving Medical Services”；in 2020，it became one of the first “National Health Commission Pilot Hospitals for Accelerated Recovery Surgery in Orthopedics” and a “National Demonstration Center for Accelerated Recovery in Joint Surgery” of the Chinese Medical Association；in 2021，it received honors including “2018-2020 National Advanced Model Hospital (Department) for Improving Medical Services”. In scientific research: Orthopedics has successively undertaken a total of 170 research projects，including the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program)，subprojects of the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program)，subprojects of the National Key Basic Research and Development Program (973 Program)，subprojects of the National “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” Science and Technology Support Program，key supported projects of the Joint Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China，the Ministry of Science and Technology National Key Research and Development Program，and general and young investigator projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (21 national-level projects and 68 provincial/ministerial-level projects over the past 5 years). It has led or participated in more than 20 multicenter clinical studies，with total funding approaching RMB 70 million. It has received 32 science and technology awards，including 2 second prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress from the Ministry of Health，2 second prizes for the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Progress Award，1 third prize for the Chinese Medical Science and Technology Progress Award，2 first prizes for Chongqing Science and Technology Progress，and 3 second prizes for Chongqing Science and Technology Progress，among others. Over the past 5 years，it has published 319 SCI papers，including 19 with an impact factor >10 points and 84 with an impact factor >5 points，with a total impact factor of 1771.88 points. It has been granted 12 national invention patents and 65 other intellectual property patents. It is especially worth mentioning that，according to a report released by Healsan Consulting LLC (American Hengxiang Consulting)，as of December 31，2021，in the ranking of hospitals worldwide by the number of orthopedic papers published，the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University published 32 papers，ranking 8th globally. Among the most active scholars worldwide in the field of orthopedics，Professor Ou Yunsheng，Professor Huang Wei，and Dr. Du Xing are listed. In addition，the paper “The evidence gap in low back pain management strategies” by Dr. Du Xing of the Orthopedics Department of our hospital was included among high-impact papers. According to “The Most Active Scholars and Their Relationship Networks”，Professor Huang Wei of our department ranked 8th among high-impact experts in Chinese orthopedics，having published 18 papers with an impact factor reaching 150.8 points. In addition，in 2021，Professor Huang Wei was ranked 7th among the “Top 50 Chinese Orthopedic Experts in 2021” by Internet Weekly，under the supervision of the Chinese Academy of Sciences，and was selected for the 2023 evaluation and selection of research-oriented disciplines of research-oriented hospitals and as a 2023 research-oriented hospital research-oriented talent. In teaching: In teaching，Orthopedics has established the earliest and most complete orthopedic medical professional training system in Southwest China，consisting of “undergraduate-master’s-doctoral-postdoctoral-post-graduation education-international Fellow”. Over the past 5 years，it has trained 158 master’s students and 44 doctoral students，and guided students to win the Gold Award in the national finals of the 8th China International “Internet+” College Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Over the past five years，it has produced 13 Outstanding Graduates of Chongqing and 13 university-level Outstanding Graduates. It has received 1 Chongqing Outstanding Dissertation，4 Excellent Doctoral Dissertations of Chongqing Medical University，and 17 Excellent Master’s Dissertations of Chongqing Medical University，and 5 people have been awarded the title of “Excellent Graduate of Chongqing Medical University”. It has trained 5 international graduate students and received 2 Fellows from abroad (Barbados) for further study. In May 2023，it successfully obtained approval for the Chongqing Foreign Educational Assistance Program and the Silk Road Project of the Municipal Government Foreign Student Mayor’s Scholarship—“Clinical Training Course in Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee Replacement”；from October to December 2023，it successfully held the first “Belt and Road” International Clinical Training Course in Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee Replacement，attracting 11 outstanding trainees from 6 countries，namely Panama，India，Ecuador，Turkmenistan，Russia，and Indonesia. The second “Belt and Road” International Clinical Training Course in Minimally Invasive Hip and Knee Replacement was conducted from March to May 2024，attracting the enthusiastic participation of 11 doctors from 4 countries，Mongolia，Panama，Ukraine，and Russia. As one of the first national units for orthopedic specialist training and standardized residency training，it has trained 48 orthopedic specialist residents over the past 3 years，with a first-attempt pass rate of 95.77% in the completion assessment. As one of the most important orthopedic advanced-training bases in Chongqing and the entire Southwest China region，it has accepted 123 medical personnel for further training over the past 5 years. The department is a deputy chief-editor institution for the national planning textbook Surgery (Sixth Edition，Seventh Edition)，and a chief and deputy chief-editor institution for the first domestic “5+3” organ-system integrated textbook Diseases of the Locomotor System；over the past 3 years，young teachers of the department have won 1 first prize and 1 second prize in the National College (Medical) Microlecture Competition，and 1 first prize and 1 third prize in the Teaching Innovation Competition，. At the same time，it has also undertaken international cooperative education，conducting joint teaching with the University of Leicester in the United Kingdom and taking the lead in and being responsible for the musculoskeletal system course of the Clinical Medicine (Chinese-Foreign Cooperative Education) program of Chongqing Medical University. The people of Orthopedics remain firm in their original aspiration and work diligently；over the past 3 years，the annual number of orthopedic operations has increased by 30%，and scientific and technological output has ranked at the forefront of the entire hospital year after year；recently，good news and reports of success have arrived one after another: on November 7，2022，the “Diseases of the Locomotor System” course led by Orthopedics was approved as a Chongqing first-class undergraduate course；on November 8，Orthopedics received approval for its first key supported project of the Joint Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China；on November 9，Huang Wei ranked 41st in the Academic Influence Ranking of Scholars’ Papers in the National Orthopedic Field (2012-2021)；on November 10，Orthopedics received approval for the “Chongqing Medical Research Center for Specialized Diseases of the Locomotor System”. With the people of Orthopedics working together，we can certainly make further progress after reaching a new height!
