Urology (Lithotripsy)
The First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University
Introduction to the Department of Urology
The Department of Urology was established in 1958 by Professors Chen Jiabiao and He Ziming, nationally renowned urologists, who were dispatched to Chongqing by Zhongshan Hospital of Shanghai First Medical College (now Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University) to establish it. Under the leadership of several generations of academic leaders, including Professors Chen Jiabiao, He Ziming, Qiao Tiyi, Chen Zaixian, Wu Xiaohou, and He Weiyang, it has now developed into a medical system of urology and andrology integrating medical care, teaching, scientific research, and preventive healthcare. It is the largest urology diagnosis and treatment center in Chongqing, comprising 2 campuses, 4 wards, and 202 beds, with nearly 100,000 outpatient visits, nearly 9,000 discharged patients, and approximately 6,000 operations annually. Its patients come from more than 20 provinces and municipalities nationwide; its specialized diagnostic and treatment capabilities rank among the leading in western China and first in Chongqing.
In 2023, the department became a pilot institution of the National Cancer Center for quality control of standardized diagnosis and treatment of prostate and bladder cancer; in 2024, it became a pilot institution of the National Cancer Center for quality control of standardized diagnosis and treatment of kidney cancer. At the same time, it is the first artificial-intelligence robotic training base in western China and is a core institution of the Chinese Medical Association Prostate Cancer Health Management Program, a Chinese Medical Association Urology Laparoscopy Training Base, a Chinese Medical Association Urinary Tract Stone Training Base, and others.
It currently has 8 subspecialty groups: Upper Urinary Tract Tumors Group, Lower Urinary Tract Tumors Group, Adrenal Diseases Group, Urinary Tract Stones Group, Prostate Diseases Group, Andrology Group, Urinary Continence, Pelvic Floor and Urinary Tract Reconstruction Group, and Renal Transplantation Group. It routinely performs all types of complex surgeries for urinary tract tumors, stones, benign prostatic hyperplasia, urinary tract reconstruction, andrology, and renal transplantation. In particular, it has developed nationally leading technical strengths in robot-assisted nephron-sparing surgery for complex renal tumors, function-preserving radical prostatectomy, radical cystectomy for bladder cancer and orthotopic neobladder surgery, resection of giant pheochromocytomas, urinary tract reconstruction, and minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of stones.
