The Department of Pathology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University and the Pathology Teaching and Research Office of Chongqing Medical University were founded in 1956, created by pathology experts transferred from the School of Medicine of Fudan University (formerly the First Shanghai Medical College) under the "westward relocation" program. After decades of development, it has become a professional pathology academic group integrating medicine, teaching and research and possessing a mature talent echelon. In the "Fudan Edition Chinese Hospital Specialty Reputation Ranking" it has ranked third in the Southwest region for many consecutive years. The department currently has 10 professors (including 3 doctoral supervisors), 15 associate professors, 12 lecturers and 46 laboratory technical personnel, of whom 7 have overseas study backgrounds, having pursued further study in the United States, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan and other places. Many members hold academic positions in academic bodies at various levels, including member of the Pathology Committee of the Chinese Medical Association, member of its Youth Committee, member of the Pathology Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, vice chairman of the Pathology Equipment Branch of the China Association of Medical Equipment, member of the Breast Disease Group of the Chinese Medical Association, member of the Tumor Pathology Committee of the Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology, member of the Tumor Pathology Committee of the China Anti-Cancer Association, vice chairman of the Chongqing Pathology Committee, vice chairman of the Pathology Branch of the Chongqing Medical Doctor Association, Chongqing academic and technical leader, director of the Chongqing Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center, expert in medical accident appraisal of the Chinese Medical Association and expert in medical accident appraisal of Chongqing. The department has advanced and complete equipment and possesses technical means such as routine pathology, immunohistochemistry, special staining, immunofluorescence, ultrastructural pathology and molecular pathology, and carries out year-round routine clinical pathological biopsy diagnosis, intraoperative frozen section rapid diagnosis, exfoliative cytology diagnosis and pathological autopsy examination, and established relatively early in the Chongqing area advanced molecular pathology technology platforms such as FISH and high-throughput sequencing, providing pathological diagnosis services for precise diagnosis of diseases and individualized treatment. At present, the department's routine clinical pathological diagnosis volume has reached more than 100,000 cases per year and intraoperative frozen rapid diagnosis more than 12,000 cases per year, ranking first among the major hospitals in Chongqing. The department has strong technical strength; in 2010 it was approved as the affiliated unit of the "Chongqing Clinical Pathology Quality Control Center", undertaking the supervision and guidance of clinical pathology medical quality control in Chongqing; in 2011 it became a provincial-level telepathology consultation center of the Ministry of Health, undertaking consultation on difficult pathology cases from the Southwest region and even the whole country, about 7,000 cases per year. In 2020 it became the "Chongqing Clinical Medical Research Center for Pathological Diagnosis", gradually building an important platform from basic scientific exploration and translation of cutting-edge technological achievements to practical clinical application. The department has established a complete training system from undergraduate education to master's, doctoral and postdoctoral training, and has received more than 100 visiting doctors of pathology from all over the country. Since being approved by the National Health Commission as a "Clinical Pathology Specialty Base" in 2016, it has trained dozens of specialized clinical pathology talents. The "Pathology" course undertaken by the department was successfully selected as a national first-class undergraduate course, and the graduate course "Molecular Pathology" was among the first batch of "Chongqing Quality Courses for Graduate Education". The department is committed to reforming teaching methods and has completed the establishment of a digital database for the standardized clinical pathology base and a virtual network platform for pathology laboratory courses, realizing the comprehensive digitalization of pathology laboratory teaching. It has won the Chongqing Teaching Achievement Award, has been chief editor or co-editor of more than 30 pathology and related textbooks, and has received titles such as "National Outstanding Teacher", Chongqing "Most Beautiful Teacher" and "Chongqing Famous Teacher". The department persists in promoting discipline development through scientific research. At present two stable research directions have been formed: tumor pathology and neuropathology.
