Transfusion Medicine

The Department of Blood Transfusion of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University was established in 1984. It has now developed into a modern transfusion medicine specialty integrating medical care, teaching and research, with a certain level of recognition in China, and is authorized to confer master's degrees.

The department currently has 32 health professionals, including 3 master's supervisors, 8 doctoral degree holders and 17 master's degree holders; among them are 3 chief technicians, 2 associate chief physicians and 5 associate chief technicians; 3 attending physicians and 3 physicians; 12 supervising technicians and 3 technicians; and 1 supervising nurse.

The department comprises 3 wards (Jixi Road Campus, High-Tech Campus, and South Campus).

Specialized Technologies

The department routinely provides the following specialized diagnostic and treatment services: testing for difficult blood groups; RhCcEe antigen testing; pre-transfusion infectious disease testing (hepatitis B five-marker serological panel, hepatitis C, AIDS, and syphilis antibody testing); lymphocytotoxicity testing and genetic/antibody testing for organ transplant matching: including HLA genotyping and anti-HLA class I and II antibody testing; predeposit autologous transfusion, including preoperative/pre-transplant apheresis collection and storage of red blood cells and platelets; blood-related therapies: single plasma exchange/adsorption, double plasma exchange, lymphoplasmapheresis, red blood cell/white blood cell/platelet depletion, preparation, storage and therapeutic use of platelet-rich plasma (PRP), stem cell collection, and pre-transplant processing of stem cells.

Specialized technology projects and priority development directions: plasma exchange + bilirubin removal, DPMAS; testing for cytochrome oxidase P4503A5 genotypes, and genetic and other related molecular testing of the ABO and Rh(D) blood groups.

Departmental Honors

The department has received the honorary title of Advanced Collective within the hospital several times. As a training base for clinical transfusion technical personnel in Anhui Province, it publishes more than 5 research and teaching papers annually, including at least 2 papers indexed by SCI. To date, it has secured 2 National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, 1 Anhui Provincial Natural Science Foundation project, 1 key scientific research project of the Natural Science Foundation of the Provincial Department of Education, as well as Anhui Teaching Quality Engineering projects and 1 Anhui provincial-level Teaching Quality Engineering project.
