Anaesthesiology

The Department of Anesthesiology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University was established in 1958, and is a National Clinical Key Specialty, a “Peak Discipline” of the hospital, and a “National First-Class Undergraduate Program Development Site in Anesthesiology”; it has a complete education and training system in anesthesiology covering doctoral/postdoctoral, master’s, and undergraduate programs, and serves as a standardized residency/specialized training base in anesthesiology; it is a comprehensive discipline integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research.

The department has a strong talent base and employs more than 150 anesthesiologists, including 13 professors/chief physicians, 38 associate senior-level professionals, 5 doctoral supervisors, and 21 master’s supervisors; its medical services cover the three campuses of Jixi Road, High-Tech, and Southern District.

Technical Advantages

The Department of Anesthesiology is equipped with 99 operating rooms and 54 anesthesia recovery beds, and performs more than 12 × ten thousand cases of surgical anesthesia annually (including more than 2500 cardiovascular surgical anesthesia cases, more than 300 organ transplantation anesthesia cases, and more than 1000 da Vinci robotic surgery anesthesia cases), more than 13 × ten thousand anesthesia outpatient visits, and more than 7 × ten thousand painless diagnosis-and-treatment cases. The department has 13 subspecialties and provides full-process services from pre-anesthesia assessment and optimization through high-quality intraoperative anesthesia management to postoperative analgesia. It routinely performs advanced techniques such as labor analgesia, transesophageal echocardiographic monitoring, ultrasound-guided nerve blocks, and vascular puncture and catheter placement, ensuring precise and personalized anesthesia.

Departmental Honors

The Department of Anesthesiology has the “Key Laboratory of Anesthesia and Perioperative Medicine of Provincial Universities”, the “National First-Class Undergraduate Program Development Site in Anesthesiology”, and the “Provincial Anesthesiology Experimental and Practical Training Center”. In recent years, the department has received funding for 26 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, more than 20 provincial- and ministerial-level projects, and has obtained more than 20 patents; it has won 2 second prizes and 3 third prizes for scientific and technological progress in Anhui Province. It publishes more than 40 SCI papers annually; each year, it trains more than 30 doctoral/master’s students and more than 30 physicians in standardized residency/specialty training.
