Haematology

The Department of Hematology of the First Affiliated Hospital of Anhui Medical University was established in 1963. It is a key clinical specialty development project in Anhui Province and a branch center of the National Clinical Medical Research Center for Hematological Diseases. It is a non-related hematopoietic stem cell transplantation hospital and hematopoietic stem cell collection hospital registered with the Management Center of the China Marrow Donor Program. It currently serves as the chair institution of the Hematology Branch of the Anhui Medical Association, the Anhui Hematology Specialty Medical Consortium, the Anhui Hematological Rare Disease Alliance, the Hematology Branch of the Anhui General Practitioners Association, the Hematology Branch of the Anhui Geriatrics Society, and the Hematologic Oncology Specialty Committee of the Anhui Clinical Oncology Society. It is a member institution of the China Hematology Specialty Alliance and has received specialty reputation nominations in the regional rankings of the Fudan University China Hospital and Specialty Reputation Rankings for many consecutive years. It is a drug clinical trial base of the National Medical Products Administration, as well as a master’s and doctoral training site of Anhui Medical University, and has trained more than 100 master’s and doctoral graduates.

The department currently has more than 90 healthcare professionals, including 10 chief physicians and professors and 14 associate chief physicians and associate professors; among them are 4 doctoral supervisors and 11 master’s supervisors. There are 2 Jianghuai Famous Physicians and Young Jianghuai Famous Physicians; the nursing staff comprises 59 nurses, including 3 associate chief nurses and 33 supervising nurses.

Advanced Technologies

The department currently has 125 beds, including 3 general wards, 2 transplant laminar-flow wards (including 19 transplant laminar-flow rooms and 34 laminar-flow beds), and 2 hematological disease laboratory testing centers. Specialty outpatient clinics are available in five hospital campuses. There are approximately 65,000 outpatient visits and more than 5,000 inpatient admissions annually. Subspecialties include hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and cellular immunotherapy, leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma. All standard types of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation are routinely performed, including autologous, haploidentical, fully matched sibling, unrelated, and umbilical cord blood transplantation. In recent years, more than 500 hematopoietic stem cell transplantations of various types have been completed, and support has been provided to multiple hospitals within the province to establish hematopoietic stem cell transplantation services.

As an initiating institution, the department established the Anhui Hematology Specialty Medical Consortium and the Anhui Hematological Rare Disease Alliance. On this basis, it established well-developed bone marrow cytology, bone marrow pathology, cellular immunophenotyping, cytogenetics, and molecular biology laboratories. It also cooperated with the Institute of Health and Medical Technology of the Hefei Institute of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, to develop high-throughput testing for tumor drug sensitivity, providing effective means for the precise diagnosis of hematologic malignancies and rare diseases and an effective approach to addressing the diagnosis and treatment of difficult and rare hematological diseases in Anhui Province.

Department Honors

The department has long adhered to giving equal emphasis to medical care and scientific research and has actively carried out international cooperation. In recent years, it has undertaken nearly 100 clinical drug trials, investigator-initiated studies, and other research projects, including more than 20 national- and provincial/ministerial-level scientific research projects, among which were subprojects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the National High-Tech Research and Development Program (863 Program).
