Paediatric Surgery

The Department of Pediatric Surgery at the First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University was established in the 1950s by Professor Lai Bingyao, one of China's first generation of pediatric surgeons, and is among the country's earliest pediatric surgery specialties. In 2010 it was designated a Guangdong pediatric surgery residency training base. It has 33 staff, including 13 physicians, four with full senior and five with associate senior titles, two doctoral and three master's supervisors. Seven physicians hold doctoral degrees and two master's degrees. It has 47 open beds and 1,632 inpatient operations annually.

Clinical care focuses on pediatric digestive and urinary diseases, vascular tumors and malignant solid tumors. It provides prenatal assessment and treatment planning for fetal digestive and urinary malformations and tumors. The hospital describes it as a Guangdong center for difficult and rare pediatric surgical diseases, serving neighboring provinces and receiving many complex and rare referrals from outside Guangdong, as well as one of South China's pediatric surgery centers for care, education and research.

The department reports five ongoing grants totaling RMB 170,000. It has trained 11 doctoral and 56 master's students and accepts one or two visiting physicians annually.

His roles include standing member of the Chinese Anti-Cancer Association pediatric oncology committee, deputy chair of its Guangdong pediatric oncology branch, deputy head of the national pediatric hepatobiliary group, deputy chair of the seventh Guangdong pediatric surgery branch, head of its general surgery group, standing member of the Guangdong integrative pediatrics branch, and editorial board member of the Chinese Journal of Pediatric Surgery, Practical Journal of Clinical Pediatrics and Journal of Clinical Pediatric Surgery.

Deputy director: Zhou Li, chief physician and doctoral supervisor. His roles include member of the Chinese Medical Association pediatric surgery society, standing member of the seventh Guangdong pediatric surgery branch, member of the national pediatric urology group, head of the Guangdong pediatric surgery urology group, standing member of the Guangdong pediatric oncology branch of the anti-cancer association, and editorial board member of General Surgery Literature.
