Paediatric Medicine — Honglou Campus
Paediatric Medicine — Honglou Campus
The paediatric department of Dongguan People's Hospital was founded in the 1950s and was one of the earliest paediatric departments established among county-level hospitals at that time. It was rated a distinctive specialty by the Guangdong Provincial Department of Health, and was named a Dongguan Advanced Collective in 1998 and in 2006 respectively. In June 1953 an internal medicine and paediatrics department was established, with 20 beds and a full-time paediatric director. In 1958 the County People's Hospital merged with the Rehabilitation Hospital and moved into the newly built wards at Honglou, with 24 beds. In 1973 the beds were expanded to 50. After the internal medicine and paediatrics building was completed in 1990, the department moved to the second floor of that building, with 60 beds; on 23 August 2002 it moved into the newly built Puji Building, and the paediatric department was divided into two zones, namely the paediatric medicine ward and the neonatal ward, with 65 beds in total. On 12 May 2011, Paediatric Zone 1 moved to the 9th floor of Building 1 at the main hospital, with 66 beds in operation and a floor area of 1,800 m². The wards are spacious, bright and well ventilated, and every room is equipped with a television and a bathroom, thereby providing sick children with a comfortable environment for treatment, recovery and rest.
The department has strong technical capability and a well-balanced personnel structure. It has both a group of senior physicians with rich clinical experience and a group of outstanding young physicians who graduated from prestigious institutions, and it regularly sends staff for further training in Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and elsewhere, forming a team with a good spirit of collaboration. There are currently 37 medical and nursing staff, including 2 Chief Physicians and 4 Attending Physicians whose specialties cover paediatric respiratory medicine, neurology and nephrology; 10 Resident Physicians; and 24 nursing staff, including 2 “zhuguan hushi” nurses. The department director and key clinical staff hold part-time posts in academic societies at various levels: member of the Guangdong paediatric branch, and vice-chair, standing committee member and committee member of the Paediatrics Branch of the Dongguan Medical Association.
The medical equipment is comprehensive, including several ventilators, monitors, cooling beds, infusion pumps, transfusion pumps and pulmonary physiotherapy devices, as well as micro blood glucose meters, blood pressure monitors, oxygen concentration meters and pulse oximeters. These allow non-invasive, timely monitoring of blood oxygen, ECG and heart rate in critically ill children, and timely minimally invasive monitoring of blood oxygen, blood glucose, bilirubin and other parameters, with the clinical laboratory providing support for all kinds of tests.
The department is able to diagnose, treat and resuscitate a wide range of paediatric medical diseases, difficult cases and critical cases. In 1982 it began percutaneous liver biopsy. In 1984 it began anterior fontanelle puncture and pericardiocentesis. In 1992 it conducted a study on the relationship between idiopathic hypercalciuria in children and familial urinary tract stones. In 1993 it began percutaneous renal biopsy in children, high-frequency jet ventilation therapy, and the diagnosis and treatment of Kawasaki disease in children. In 1994 it began the diagnosis and treatment of paediatric epilepsy and intellectual disability, and testing of immune function and allergens in paediatric asthma; from 2000 it began standardised treatment of paediatric asthma. In 2009, with the support of the cardiology department, it installed the first temporary pacemaker in a child with third-degree atrioventricular block. Specialist outpatient clinics have been opened for paediatric asthma, paediatric neurology and paediatric nephrology. The department has extensive experience in the emergency treatment of all kinds of poisoning, snake bites, severe asthma and intracranial infection, and has maintained a relatively high success rate. For many years the paediatric department has undertaken clinical paediatric teaching for interns from Sun Yat-sen University, Southern Medical University, Guangdong Medical College and other institutions, and accepts physicians from secondary hospitals for advanced training, with rich teaching experience and repeated recognition as an advanced teaching and research section. In research, it has undertaken a number of research projects at provincial and municipal level on repeated occasions, and has successively received one first prize, two second prizes and five third prizes of the Dongguan Science and Technology Progress Award; nearly 100 papers have been published in journals including the Chinese Journal of Nephrology, Chinese Pediatric Emergency Medicine, the Journal of Neonatology, the Chinese Journal of Practical Pediatrics, the Chinese Journal of Contemporary Pediatrics, Chinese Journal of Pediatric Hematology and New Medicine.
