Transfusion Medicine

The Department of Transfusion Medicine provides blood services for clinical care. As a Grade A tertiary general hospital, the hospital has substantial annual blood requirements, accounting for approximately 1/6 of total blood use in Dongguan. Transfusion Medicine is an important clinical support department with an indispensable role in treatment. Its main responsibilities include receiving, storing and issuing blood and performing transfusion-related testing; participating in the diagnosis and treatment of transfusion-related diseases; advising on clinical transfusion; contributing to transfusion quality management, teaching and research; and archiving transfusion-related records.

The department is on Level 3 of the outpatient and medical technology building. Equipment includes dedicated crossmatching centrifuges, automated plasma thawers, blood-storage refrigerators, low-temperature freezers and temperature-controlled platelet agitators. A newly acquired Diana automated crossmatching and blood-group analyser, imported directly from Spain, has substantially improved the accuracy and sensitivity of crossmatching and blood-group testing and reduced the risk of human error from manual procedures. The department's automation is among the most advanced in the city.
