Gynaecology

The Department of Gynecology at the Tenth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University (Dongguan People's Hospital) is a designated unit in Guangdong's provincial key clinical specialty development program (2024), a Dongguan key clinical specialty (2019), a national specialty base for drug clinical trials, a base for China's Practical Gynecological Endocrinology Training Program, a Guangdong training base for gynecologic endoscopic diagnostic and treatment techniques, and a Dongguan specialty service for menopausal health care. Over many years, the discipline has worked to improve clinical diagnosis and treatment, with specialty development and service capabilities among the city's leaders.

Gynecologic outpatient services are offered at three locations: Honglou Outpatient Department, Puji Outpatient Department and the First Outpatient Department. Subspecialty clinics include general gynecology, gynecologic oncology, gynecologic endocrinology, menopause, diseases of the uterine cervix, hysteroscopy and pelvic floor reconstruction, and are widely trusted by patients.

Inpatient care spans two campuses, Honglou and Puji, and three wards: Gynecology Ward 1 and Ward 2 at Honglou, and Gynecology at Puji. There are 118 beds in operation, with a bed occupancy rate of 76%.

The discipline has 119 health professionals: 54 physicians, 53 nurses and 12 technicians. In the professional rank structure, approximately 22.22% hold full senior ranks (正高级) and 35.19% hold associate senior ranks (副高级) in the Chinese professional rank system; in the educational qualification structure, 7.41% hold doctoral degrees and 46.30% hold master's degrees.

The discipline independently and routinely performs a range of advanced techniques, including laparoscopic pelvic floor reconstruction, single-port laparoscopy, laparoscopic removal of benign masses, and surgery for malignancies such as laparoscopic radical surgery for cervical cancer, comprehensive staging surgery for endometrial cancer and for early-stage ovarian cancer. It also performs hysteroscopic electrosurgical resection of submucosal uterine fibroids, polypectomy and adhesiolysis for intrauterine adhesions. In 2025, surgery accounted for 84.49% of discharged patients, grade IV surgery under the Chinese surgical classification system for 20.19%, and minimally invasive surgery excluding hysteroscopy for 47.25%, including more than 300 single-port laparoscopic procedures. The discipline has introduced da Vinci robotic surgery, using advanced technology to protect the health of women in Dongguan.

In 2024–2025, under director Yang Xiaojun, the discipline successfully registered nine new techniques: laparoscopic lateral abdominal wall suspension, now in routine use; intrauterine placement of autologous platelet-rich fibrin; laparoscopic sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) for early-stage endometrial cancer, now in routine use; pelvic autonomic nerve-sparing radical surgery for cervical cancer; robot-assisted minimally invasive gynecologic surgery; autologous fascia lata midurethral sling surgery; mesh-reinforced repair of myometrial scar defects; transvaginal mesh reconstruction of the anterior pelvic floor; and platelet-rich plasma injection for vulvar lichen sclerosus and postmenopausal vulvovaginal atrophy. Intrauterine placement of autologous platelet-rich fibrin and platelet-rich plasma injection for vulvar lichen sclerosus and postmenopausal vulvovaginal atrophy are leading techniques within the province. Autologous fascia lata midurethral sling surgery and mesh-reinforced repair of myometrial scar defects are leading techniques nationally. In 2024, two techniques were successfully registered under Guangdong's appropriate medical technology program: dissemination of whole-course fertility-preserving management, and a hysteroscopic technique using a GyneFix device to assist Mirena placement. In 2025, one further appropriate technique was registered: umbilical anchoring reconstruction in single-port laparoscopy.

In April 2025, Associate Chief Physician Wu Xuewei was invited to Spain to attend the Global Congress on Hysteroscopy. In May, director Yang Xiaojun was invited to the International Forum on Telocytes. In December, Associate Chief Physician Zhong Shulin was invited to Türkiye to attend the 34th ESGC annual meeting.

In research, Gynecology is a qualified specialty within the hospital's nationally recognized drug clinical trial institution. In the past five years, it has participated in more than 10 registration trials of medicines, undertaken five provincial projects and several key municipal research projects. In 2023, approval was granted to establish the Dongguan Key Laboratory of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The discipline has one doctoral supervisor, Yang Xiaojun, and one master's supervisor, Wu Mingxiu. It was among the first national standardized residency training bases in obstetrics and gynecology. All participants successfully passed standardized residency training, with 21 completions in 2024 and 13 in 2025; 41 trainees are currently in training. The discipline hosts the Dongguan Yang Xiaojun Renowned Physician Studio and the Wu Mingxiu Leading Medical Talent Studio. Xie Jin and Chen Yanya have been awarded the title of Outstanding Young Medical Talent of Dongguan. Strong research and training capabilities provide continued vitality for the discipline.
