Paediatric Surgery
The Paediatric Surgery Department of Dongguan People's Hospital was established to give prominence to specialist features, and Dongguan People's Hospital is one of the small number of hospitals in Dongguan with a separate paediatric surgery department. The department has a dedicated ward designed specifically for children admitted for paediatric surgery, with a comfortable and pleasant environment. Supported by the hospital's modern diagnostic and treatment equipment, including magnetic resonance imaging, spiral CT and high-definition laparoscopy, it performs a wide range of paediatric surgical operations; its scope of diagnosis and treatment is mainly surgical disorders in children under 14 years of age.
It has 20 open beds, with more than 1,200 inpatient admissions a year and nearly 1,000 operations a year. The ward is located on Level 4 of Inpatient Building 4 at Honglou Campus, and the paediatric surgery outpatient clinic is on Level 3 of the Central Outpatient Department.
The department currently has 6 physicians and 12 nurses, including 1 Chief Physician specialising in paediatric surgery and 4 attending physicians in paediatric surgery; it is a team that combines energy with a pioneering and innovative spirit. The specialty leader, Chief Physician Wang Liyong, graduated in 1997 with a specialisation in paediatrics. He led the research project "Partial resection of the internal anal sphincter during the transanal Soave procedure for the treatment of congenital Hirschsprung disease", which received a second prize in the municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards. He also took part in "Laparoscopic curtain-like repair of the internal ring for giant inguinal hernia in children", which received a third prize in the municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards. He has published 15 papers. Since joining Dongguan People's Hospital in October 2010, he has progressively developed the diagnosis, treatment and surgery of paediatric surgical diseases such as neonatal lymphangioma, meconium peritonitis, congenital omphaloenteric fistula, omphalocele, gastroschisis, giant retroperitoneal teratoma, congenital choledochal cyst and congenital anal malformation. He also introduced new technical projects at the hospital, including transanal Soave radical procedure for congenital Hirschsprung disease, laparoscopic transanal Soave radical procedure for congenital Hirschsprung disease, and laparoscopic exploration and reduction for recurrent intussusception, which have filled gaps at the hospital and in the Dongguan area. He is a member of the Paediatric Surgery Branch of the Guangdong Medical Association.
1. The main specialty areas include
(1) Neonatal surgery
1. Omphalocele, omphaloenteric fistula and urachal fistula 2. Congenital intestinal atresia 3. Congenital midgut malrotation 4. Congenital anorectal malformation 5. Annular pancreas
(2) Paediatric abdominal surgery
1. Congenital choledochal cyst 2. Congenital Hirschsprung disease 3. Paediatric emergency surgery, such as intussusception, acute appendicitis and incarcerated hernia
(3) Paediatric minimally invasive surgery
1. Laparoscopic high ligation of the internal inguinal ring for paediatric hernia 2. Laparoscopic ligation of the communicating tract for paediatric communicating hydrocele 3. Laparoscopic orchidopexy (descent and fixation) for paediatric undescended testis 4. Laparoscopic pyloromyotomy for congenital hypertrophic pyloric stenosis 5. Laparoscopic resection of Meckel's diverticulum 6. Laparoscopic radical procedure for congenital Hirschsprung disease 7. Laparoscopic appendectomy 8. Laparoscopic reduction of intussusception 9. Laparoscopic excision of mesenteric cyst
(4) Paediatric oncological surgery
1. Haemangioma and lymphangioma 2. Abdominal solid tumours (teratoma, nephroblastoma, neuroblastoma, etc.) 3. Sebaceous adenoma
(5) Other paediatric surgical diseases
Congenital torticollis, polydactyly of the fingers or toes, branchial cleft cyst, thyroglossal cyst and superficial abscess.
The department's routine scope of diagnosis and treatment mainly includes common conditions such as hernia, hydrocele, undescended testis, phimosis, haemangioma, intussusception and appendicitis, as well as congenital malformations and diseases in neonatal surgery, abdominal surgery, urology and childhood tumours.
Its rescue, diagnosis and treatment of critically ill and difficult patients is at the forefront of the city. Supported by the hospital's modern diagnostic and treatment equipment, including magnetic resonance imaging, spiral CT and high-definition laparoscopy, it performs technically demanding operations such as biliary reconstruction for choledochal cyst and radical procedure for congenital Hirschsprung disease.
In addition to conventional surgery, it also widely performs various minimally invasive operations, such as laparoscopic appendectomy, laparoscopic high ligation of the internal ring for paediatric hernia or hydrocele, laparoscopic excision of neonatal ovarian cyst, laparoscopic radical procedure for Hirschsprung disease and laparoscopic abdominal exploration.
