Burns, Plastic and Wound Reconstruction Surgery

The Department of Burns, Plastic and Wound Reconstruction Surgery of the Tenth Affiliated Hospital of Southern Medical University (Dongguan People's Hospital) is a Guangdong Provincial Key Clinical Specialty and a Dongguan Municipal Key Clinical Specialty, and it hosts the Dongguan Key Laboratory for Burns, Plastic Surgery and Wound Repair. Founded in 1983, the department is one of the earliest burn specialty departments established in Guangdong Province. After more than 40 years of sustained development, it has become a comprehensive specialty integrating the diagnosis and treatment of burns, plastic surgery, scar prevention and treatment, chronic refractory wounds and limb functional reconstruction.

The department has a certain degree of influence within the field. For several consecutive years it has been selected as a nominated institution in the South China Regional Burn Department Reputation Ranking, and it has been recognized as a Chinese Wound Repair Specialty Cultivation Unit, a member unit of the Greater Bay Area Burn Clinical Research Collaboration Center, a national standardized residency training base in plastic surgery, and a Guangdong Provincial clinical practice training base for burn and wound specialty nurses.

The department has a strong team, with 9 specialist physicians and more than 20 nursing staff. Among them are 1 supervisor of doctoral candidates, 1 supervisor of master's candidates, 2 Chief Physicians, 3 Associate Chief Physicians, 1 Chief Nurse and 1 Associate Chief Nurse; 1 holds a doctoral degree and 3 hold master's degrees. Many of them hold posts in national, provincial and municipal academic societies, making this a professional medical and nursing team with refined skills, strong cohesion and a readiness to innovate.

The department has an intensive care ward area and is fully equipped with diagnostic and treatment facilities, covering air-fluidized beds, laminar-flow clean wards, turning beds, ventilators, ECG monitoring, central oxygen supply and central negative-pressure (vacuum) systems. It routinely admits patients with severe burns and with various critical conditions, which underpins the success rate of treatment for critically ill patients. Its treatment of severe extensive deep burns is at a leading level within the province; in multiple burn emergencies it has accomplished its tasks outstandingly, successfully treating large numbers of burn patients and critically ill burn patients, and it has repeatedly been commended by the Dongguan Municipal Government.

Has led one project of the National Natural Science Foundation of China; has received the Provincial Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize and Third Prize), the Provincial Youth Science and Technology Award and the Second Prize of the Provincial Medical Association, among others; and has published more than 40 papers as first author or corresponding author in core journals in China and abroad.

Zhou Xue — Head Nurse; Chief Nurse; has been engaged in burn and plastic surgery nursing for more than 30 years. Recognized as an outstanding key professional talent of Dongguan City and a medical discipline backbone of Dongguan public hospitals. Vice Chairperson of the Burn and Burn Rehabilitation Nursing Professional Committee of the Guangdong Nursing Association, Vice Chairperson of the Burn and Wound Nursing Professional Committee of the Guangdong Nurses Association, Standing Committee Member of the Plastic and Aesthetic Nursing Professional Committee of the Guangdong Nursing Association, and head of the Guangdong Nursing Association training base for burn and burn rehabilitation specialty nurses.

Wen Shuhua — Nursing Team Leader; Associate Chief Nurse; has been engaged in burn and plastic surgery nursing for 30 years. A burn and rehabilitation specialty nurse, an advanced practice nurse (APN) specialist in health services management and nursing leadership, and a Sino-European international wound therapist. Specializes in emergency treatment and nursing for severe burns and mass-casualty burns and in early functional rehabilitation, and has rich clinical experience in managing all kinds of acute and chronic wounds and stomas. Huang Yanzhen — Nursing Teaching Team Leader; a "zhuguan hushi" nurse; has been engaged in burn and plastic surgery nursing for 20 years, and has rich experience in shock-phase nursing of patients with extremely severe burns and in difficult nursing problems involving complications, combined injuries and mass-casualty burns in critically ill burn patients. A Dongguan first-cohort wound and stoma specialty nurse and has mastered the nursing methods for acute and chronic wound care and for negative-pressure wound drainage techniques. A member of the "Internet + Nursing Service" team of Dongguan People's Hospital, with more than 100 cumulative home-visit nursing services (home nursing items: dressing changes for acute and chronic wounds, replacement of gastric tubes, urinary catheters and the like).
