Gastrointestinal Surgery Department II
The Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery II is one of the components of General Surgery, a national-level key specialty of our hospital. It is a specialized department integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research. It is a key specialty in Liaoning Province, as well as a demonstration ward for enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) and a demonstration ward for VTE prevention and treatment in our hospital. The department focuses on the diagnosis and minimally invasive treatment of gastric and colorectal tumors, as well as the minimally invasive treatment of obesity and metabolic diseases. At present, the department has 22 authorized beds, 2 staff members with senior professional titles, 2 attending physicians, and 2 resident physicians, including 2 master's supervisors and 5 members with doctoral degrees. The department emphasizes international exchange and talent development. Two physicians have undertaken training and study as visiting scholars, one at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), United States, and the other at the National Cancer Center Hospital in Tokyo, Japan. Two members have been awarded the title of High-Level Talent of Dalian City. The department has an excellent specialized nursing and ostomy care team, including 1 international ostomy therapist and 3 members with master's degrees.
Under the leadership of Professor Liu Yan, Director of the Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery II, the department has established comprehensive principles for the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal tumors with an attitude of rigor and pursuit of excellence, and has advanced diagnostic and treatment concepts and a multidisciplinary discussion system. The department routinely performs minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for gastrointestinal tumors and robotic-assisted surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System. Among these, laparoscopic radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer (total, proximal, and distal gastrectomy), laparoscopic radical surgery for right-sided colon cancer (extended), laparoscopic radical surgery for rectal cancer (low), intersphincteric resection (ISR) for rectal cancer, transanal total mesorectal excision (TaTME), laparoscopic total colectomy, and other techniques have all reached a leading level in China. The department has won awards multiple times in various surgical competitions organized by the Chinese Medical Association, and achieved the excellent result of fifth place nationwide in the “Golden Fingers” surgical competition organized by the Chinese Medical Association in 2020. Strict diagnostic and treatment procedures have been established within the department. Individualized perioperative enteral nutrition regimens are developed to reduce the discomfort and financial burden caused to patients by long-term parenteral nutrition. Careful and scientific measures for venous thrombosis screening, prevention, and monitoring are adopted to effectively reduce the incidence of perioperative lower-extremity deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism. Objective and rigorous perioperative treatment plans, as well as long-term postoperative follow-up and nutritional guidance measures, are developed for patients undergoing weight-loss surgery.
The department undertakes teaching activities including postgraduate training, standardized training for resident physicians, standardized training for general surgery specialists, and internship supervision and teaching for undergraduate students, providing society with a large number of medical professionals over the years. It emphasizes clinical and basic research and contributes to the development of medicine. In recent years, it has published more than 20 SCI papers, with a maximum impact factor of 11.799, and more than 20 papers in Chinese. It has led 1 National Natural Science Foundation of China project, 1 Liaoning Provincial Science and Technology Plan project, and 2 municipal-level projects; participated in multiple national-, provincial-, and municipal-level projects; and served as chief editor of 2 medical monographs.
