Puwan Campus – Pathology Department

The Pathology Department of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University was established in 1969. It is a key discipline of Liaoning Province integrating medical care, teaching, and scientific research, as well as a standardized training base for pathology resident physicians at both the Liaoning provincial and national levels. For many years, it has recruited pathology resident physicians for standardized training and master's postgraduate students in clinical pathology. The department has strong capabilities in professional technology, research, and teaching, with 1 doctoral supervisor, 6 master's supervisors, 4 chief physicians, and 3 deputy chief physicians. It has trained and graduated more than 50 postgraduate students, completed more than 10 national-, provincial-, and municipal-level projects, and published nearly 100 high-level academic papers.

The Pathology Department of the Puwan Campus is affiliated with the main hospital; its physicians and technicians all have many years of work experience and excellent professional capabilities. The department is well equipped and performs routine paraffin pathology diagnosis, intraoperative frozen-section pathology diagnosis, immunohistochemistry, and immunofluorescence testing for vaginal pathogenic microorganisms. In coordination with the main hospital campus, it can perform cytological smears, TCT and HPV testing, FISH testing for HER-2 gene amplification in breast and gastric cancers, C-MYC, BCL-2, and gene-translocation testing for lymphoma, and PCR testing of disease-related genes in lung cancer, intestinal cancer, thyroid cancer, and other diseases.

The Pathology Department has a well-structured academic talent echelon comprising senior, middle-aged, and young professionals, and possesses advanced pathology techniques and diagnostic capabilities. It can complete pathology diagnoses for all kinds of difficult cases and is particularly adept at the pathological diagnosis and differential diagnosis of tumors. In 2016, it took the lead in establishing a telepathology diagnosis center and built a telepathology diagnosis and consultation platform with 12 hospitals inside and outside the province (including the Nagqu region of Tibet). Every year, it completes more than 5,000 remote difficult-case pathology diagnoses and consultations; it established the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University Lymphoma Pathology Alliance, continuously promoting the review of regional lymphoma pathology diagnostic reports and the establishment of a quality-control system, strengthening continuing education and talent training in lymphoma, and promoting the standardization of regional lymphoma pathology techniques and diagnosis; the young pathology diagnosis team won third prize in the final of the 3rd Image Recognition Elite Competition of “Jianwei Zhizhu”, demonstrating the solid basic skills and high-level diagnostic capabilities of the department’s young talent.
