Puwan Campus Thoracic Surgery Department
The Department of Thoracic Surgery of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University was founded in 1957. It is a clinical key department of Liaoning Province, a national standardized clinical training base for thoracic and cardiovascular surgery, an "ERAS Demonstration Ward" of the Chinese Research Hospital Association, and the only department in the Dalian region qualified for lung transplantation. It currently comprises three subspecialties: Thoracic Surgery Ward 1, Thoracic Surgery Ward 2, and the Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Puwan Campus. There are 20 registered physicians, including 5 chief physicians and 5 associate chief physicians, 2 doctoral supervisors and 3 master's supervisors; all physicians hold a master's degree or above, including 5 with doctoral degrees and 2 currently pursuing doctorates. In the past five years, the department has led or participated in 3 National Natural Science Foundation projects and more than 10 provincial- and ministerial-level research projects, with cumulative research funding of nearly one million yuan. It has established one lung cancer specimen database, published more than 30 related papers, of which more than 10 are SCI-indexed, with a cumulative impact factor of more than 40. The department routinely performs surgeries for chest trauma, lung tumors, esophageal tumors, mediastinal tumors, and lung transplantation for end-stage lung disease. For lung cancer, it fully carries out uniportal or single-instrument-port video-assisted thoracoscopic radical resection of lung cancer, precise segmentectomy, tracheoplasty and carinoplasty, and double-sleeve resection and reconstruction of the trachea and pulmonary artery, among other highly difficult operations. For esophageal cancer, it fully performs thoracolaparoscopic radical resection of esophageal cancer, two-incision and three-incision radical esophagectomy, and colon interposition anastomosis, with rich experience in minimally invasive surgery for esophageal cancer. The department has now organically integrated minimally invasive surgery, radiofrequency and microwave ablation, molecular targeted therapy and immunotherapy to provide patients with optimal treatment plans. Some patients with intermediate-to-late-stage tumors regain hope of "cure" through comprehensive treatments such as preoperative neoadjuvant therapy, making the department a leading unit in neoadjuvant immunotherapy in the three northeastern provinces. In addition, the department adheres to using the concept of Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) to guide perioperative management, maximizing the reduction of patients' suffering, shortening hospital stays and improving the medical care experience, providing strong guarantees for patients' prognosis. The Department of Thoracic Surgery at the Puwan Campus upholds the hospital motto of "Honoring virtue and valuing medicine," actively practices the spirit of the medical profession in the new era — "revering life, saving the dying and healing the wounded, willing to dedicate, with boundless love" — and safeguards the health of the people in southern Liaoning through high-quality medical services and advanced medical technology.
