Puwan Campus – Neurosurgery Department
The Department of Neurosurgery of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University was founded in the 1950s. Through the efforts of several generations, it has now developed into a large neurosurgical diagnosis and treatment center in the southern Liaoning region that integrates medical care, scientific research, and teaching. It is a key specialty of Liaoning Province, a master's and doctoral training site in neurosurgery of Dalian Medical University, and a standardized residency training base for neurosurgery in Liaoning Province. The department has undertaken projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and more than ten research projects at various levels from the Ministry of Health, the Provincial Science and Technology Commission, and the Provincial Education Commission. It has hosted national academic conferences and national- and provincial-level continuing education programs on many occasions, and has received various kinds of sci-tech awards at different levels, including Second and Third Prizes for Scientific and Technological Progress from Liaoning Province and Dalian Municipality. The annual surgical volume exceeds 1,000 cases. The Neurosurgery Department of the Puwan Campus is a high-standard, high-level neurosurgery team built on the basis of the Neurosurgery Department of the Xinghai Main Campus, with outstanding key members of the Xinghai Campus neurosurgery team at its core. With strong support from the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University, it has been built into the center for the diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of nervous system diseases in northern Dalian, a stroke emergency center, and a center for the treatment of critical cerebrovascular and craniocerebral injury cases. The department is equipped with the world's most advanced surgical equipment, including the German Zeiss surgical microscope, the Stryker neuroendoscopy system, a cerebral vascular DSA system, the Codman intracranial pressure monitoring system, Brainlab intraoperative neuro-navigation, BK intraoperative ultrasound, the Leksell stereotactic head frame system, and the Medtronic surgical power system. All physicians in the department are young and middle-aged key members holding doctoral degrees, who master the most advanced treatment concepts and cutting-edge diagnostic and therapeutic technologies. The scope of services covers all diseases in the field of neurosurgery, including brain tumors, cerebrovascular diseases, functional neurosurgery, and severe craniocerebral injuries. These include surgical treatment of gliomas, complex pituitary tumors, craniopharyngiomas, giant acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, cholesteatomas, skull base tumors and tumors communicating between the inside and outside of the skull, as well as intraspinal tumors. Endovascular interventional therapy is routinely performed, including for intracranial aneurysms, brain arteriovenous malformations, dural arteriovenous fistulas, carotid-cavernous fistulas, and carotid and intracranial artery stenosis. Functional neurosurgical procedures routinely performed include deep brain nucleus lesioning and deep electrode implantation (DBS) for Parkinson's disease, resection of epileptogenic foci and corpus callosotomy for refractory epilepsy, and microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and hemifacial spasm.
