Diamond Bay Campus – Bone Surgery Ward
The Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the Diamond Bay Campus of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University is a key specialty in Liaoning Province and an authorized master’s degree-granting site; it currently has 26 beds in operation. It is equipped with advanced specialized equipment, including a C-arm from the US company GE, a Weigao high-speed centrifuge, microwave therapy equipment, bone-trauma treatment equipment, a lower-extremity venous massage pump, portable ultrasound equipment, a discoscope, an arthroscope and other advanced medical equipment. The average annual surgical volume is 600 procedures, with more than 1,200 patient discharges. The department has a strong professional team, currently comprising four professors/chief physicians with senior professional titles, one associate professor and one attending physician. Of these, three have doctoral degrees and three have master’s degrees. Its specialties include spine surgery, joint surgery, trauma surgery, hand and foot microsurgery, bone and soft-tissue tumor surgery and other disciplines.
In addition to independently performing internal fixation of fractures of the extremities and spine, total knee arthroplasty, revision of artificial joints, arthroscopic meniscectomy and cruciate ligament reconstruction, total hip arthroplasty, posterior cervical laminoplasty for enlargement of the spinal canal, anterior cervical spinal canal decompression and internal fixation, minimally invasive spinal endoscopic surgery, lumbar fenestration discectomy, spinal tumor resection, limb-salvage surgery for malignant tumors, arthroplasty for intertrochanteric fractures in elderly patients and other procedures, the department has extensive experience in the conservative treatment of age-related conditions such as neck and shoulder pain, low back and leg pain, knee osteoarthritis and osteoporosis. In particular, in recent years the department has closely followed the current trend toward knee and hip preservation and pioneered, in southern Liaoning, the use of PRP (platelet-rich plasma) to treat knee osteoarthritis, meniscal injuries and other conditions. On this basis, it also pioneered the application of PRP to fracture nonunion and nonhealing wounds, establishing a good reputation among the public. From April 2016 to the present, nearly 4,000 cases of various PRP surgical treatments have been performed, producing good social benefits. The department is currently developing musculoskeletal ultrasound treatment for PRP applications and pain management; this is the first such development in Dalian and is at the forefront in Liaoning Province. Recently, vascular-anastomosed autologous fibular transplantation combined with PRP for the treatment of femoral head necrosis was performed as the first case in Liaoning Province and received unanimous acclaim from the professional community.
The Orthopedic Surgery Department of the Diamond Bay Campus, as part of the Orthopedics Department of the Xinghai Campus, also undertakes some teaching responsibilities. It currently has two supervisors of master’s students and has trained more than 10 graduate students over the past five years. It also undertakes undergraduate teaching at Dalian Medical University. In particular, in recent years, as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) technology was pioneered within the province, approximately 20 physicians from multiple hospitals in the province have been attracted to our department for further training.
In recent years, the Department of Orthopedic Surgery of the Diamond Bay Campus has closely followed international and domestic trends in knee and hip preservation and strengthened academic and technical exchanges with the Sixth Hospital Affiliated with Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Its current technical level in knee and hip preservation ranks among the advanced levels in China. Over the past five years, it has published eight international papers (SCI), more than 20 papers in domestic core academic journals, served as chief editor or co-editor of more than 10 academic works, and undertaken five projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and provincial scientific research programs. Over the past five years, multiple staff members have successively traveled to Shanghai Sixth Hospital, Peking University Third Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of Zhengzhou University and other institutions for long- or short-term study and academic exchange.
