Critical Care Medicine Ward
The Department of Critical Care Medicine of our hospital was established in 2004. It is one of the earliest-established and fastest-developing disciplines in Dalian, integrating clinical care, teaching, research and management. It is a key specialty of Liaoning Province and a key discipline of Dalian, one of the first national specialist training bases, and is able to conduct “integrated residency and specialty training”. It now has a high-quality technical backbone team composed mainly of PhD and master's degree holders with abundant experience. The department director, Professor Yu Jian, a chief physician, doctoral supervisor and master's supervisor, serves as a member of the First and Second Committees of the Critical Care Medicine Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association, a member of the Critical Care Medicine Branch of the Chinese Association of Pathophysiology, vice chairman of the Critical Care Medicine Branch of the Liaoning Medical Association, chairman-elect of the Dalian Critical Care Medicine Branch, vice chairman of the Critical Care Medicine Professional Committee of the Liaoning Society for Cell Biology, deputy director of the Liaoning Critical Care Medicine Quality Control Center, standing committee member of the Critical Care Medicine Physicians Branch of the Liaoning Medical Doctor Association, member of the First Expert Committee of the China Organ Transplant Development Foundation, standing committee member of the Chest Pain Professional Committee of the China Medical Education Association, standing committee member of the First Responder On-site Rescue Professional Committee of the China Association for the Health Care of the Elderly, standing committee member of the Dalian Group of the Cardiac Critical Care Branch of the China International Health Exchange and Promotion Association, member of the Disaster Medicine Professional Committee of the Liaoning Association of Integrative Medicine, member of the 10th Council of the Dalian Medical Association, a national-level emergency expert for public health emergencies, and an editorial board member of Practical Shock and other journals. Staff of the department have been awarded the title of “Outstanding Communist Party Member” of Dalian Medical University, advanced individual in Dalian's “365 Days of Safe Medical Practice” programme and “Outstanding Department Director of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University”, and the department has been named an advanced management department and outstanding department of the hospital for several consecutive years.
After 17 years of continuous effort, the Department of Critical Care Medicine has grown to 30 high-grade comprehensive beds, each equipped with modern dedicated monitoring equipment and a multifunctional monitoring bed, and has advanced monitors, ventilators, fully automatic blood gas analysers, continuous bedside haemofiltration machines, haemodynamic monitoring and other equipment. Following a disease-centred treatment philosophy, the department continuously strengthens its medical and nursing workforce and now has a sound talent echelon: more than 80 staff, including 23 physicians and more than 60 nurses. The department has 1 professor, 3 chief physicians, 3 associate chief physicians, 14 attending physicians and 2 resident physicians, all with postgraduate or higher education, including 1 PhD and 4 PhD candidates. The ratio of physicians holding the critical care medicine physician qualification certificate to beds is 0.96:1; the ratio of nurses to beds is 2.5:1.
The Department of Critical Care Medicine upholds the philosophy of “specialised critical care treatment, professional critical care physicians and a home-like critical care ward”. The department carries out basic and clinical research on sepsis, perioperative management of transplant recipients, comprehensive treatment of deep vein thrombosis complicated by acute pulmonary thromboembolism, perioperative management of critically ill patients, mechanical ventilation for critically ill patients, blood purification therapy for MODS, ultrasound-guided puncture therapy and comprehensive treatment of airway stenosis, raising the level of treatment for critically ill patients. In addition to routine diagnosis and treatment of critical illness, it has focused on: (1) comprehensive treatment of patients with sepsis, being specifically engaged in clinical and basic work on standardised comprehensive treatment of sepsis, selecting the optimal treatment for patients so that patients with sepsis receive the best “one-stop” service; (2) in recent years, in the field of acute pancreatitis treatment, it has recommended a multidisciplinary comprehensive rescue model led by critical care medicine and based mainly on non-surgical treatment; the SAP diagnosis and treatment team of the Department of Critical Care Medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University can rapidly diagnose acute pancreatitis and assess its severity, promptly provide standardised treatment, reduce the incidence of late complications and the rate of surgical intervention, and shorten hospital stay, admitting nearly 30 or more SAP patients annually with remarkable therapeutic results; (3) capacity for diagnosis and treatment of difficult cases: the department's level of rescue and treatment of difficult cases such as fever with thrombocytopenia syndrome and acute poisoning is leading in China. At the same time, the department attaches importance to the coordinated development of “clinical care, teaching and research”; through the unremitting efforts of all medical and nursing staff, the discipline's teaching, research level and academic influence have entered the advanced ranks in China. In recent years the department has undertaken or completed more than 10 research projects, published more than 60 papers in core journals at home and abroad and more than 10 SCI articles. The department emphasises teaching; in addition to routine teaching tasks, it has repeatedly participated in training for the China College Students' Medical Technical Skills Competition and guided students to win the national championship. Staff of the department served as associate chief editor of the monograph Clinical Basic Skills Training Guide and participated in the compilation of national higher medical college planned textbooks including Outline of Clinical Medicine, its companion textbook Study Guide and Exercise Book for Outline of Clinical Medicine, and Critical Care Nursing.
