The Fifth Cardiology Department is the Cardiovascular Care Unit (CCU), founded in July 2013 and located on the 9th floor of Building B of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University. The CCU brings together advanced monitoring systems and resuscitation equipment. It has 32 open beds, and every bed is equipped with a multifunctional ECG monitor, a central oxygen supply system, a central suction system and micropumps. All bedside multifunctional monitors are connected to the central monitoring system at the nursing station, allowing continuous monitoring of electrocardiography, non-invasive/invasive blood pressure, blood oxygen saturation and invasive hemodynamics. The CCU is also equipped with advanced instruments such as the American intra-aortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP) device, defibrillators, temporary pacemakers and a computerized automatic synchronous analysis 18-lead ECG machine. These advanced devices provide favorable conditions for safe dynamic monitoring and timely, successful resuscitation. The unit is also furnished with auxiliary cardiac examinations such as ambulatory ECG, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, treadmill exercise testing and transesophageal atrial pacing. Patients receive 24-hour uninterrupted monitoring, which guarantees effective and accurate treatment.

The CCU has strong medical capabilities, and all CCU physicians hold a master's degree or above and a title of attending physician or above. There are 3 chief physicians, 1 postdoctoral researcher, 4 doctoral degree holders and 18 nursing staff, all with bachelor's degrees or above, including 7 nurses-in-charge, 10 senior nurses and 1 nurse. The unit is tasked with admitting critically ill patients of cardiology, and has rich experience in the treatment and resuscitation of critically ill cardiovascular patients, including acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina, heart failure of various causes, malignant arrhythmias (frequent premature ventricular contractions, ventricular tachycardia, supraventricular tachycardia, bradyarrhythmias), hypertensive crisis, aortic dissecting aneurysm, severe myocarditis, various cardiomyopathies, cardiogenic shock, sudden cardiac death and post-resuscitation states, after percutaneous coronary intervention, massive pericardial effusion, pulmonary embolism and cor pulmonale, as well as critical cardiovascular diseases requiring monitored treatment when complicated by or concomitant with severe cardiac disease of other system disorders (renal insufficiency, hepatic insufficiency, dialysis, hematological diseases, connective tissue diseases, stroke and peripheral vascular diseases, etc.). Each year, more than 2,000 patients with difficult and critical cardiovascular diseases are successfully treated, with an average mortality rate below 1%.

The CCU is currently a key discipline of Liaoning Province, a national standardized residency training base, a cardiovascular drug clinical trial base and a doctoral enrollment unit. Through the efforts of several generations of experts, as a national and Liaoning provincial chest pain center, it has established a "green channel" for the treatment of acute myocardial infarction, open 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, providing emergency interventional treatment for patients with acute myocardial infarction and saving countless lives.

The CCU undertakes the training of doctoral and master's students, the theoretical teaching, internship and clerkship supervision of undergraduates, and the standardized training of residents, cultivating a large number of outstanding medical talents for the country.
