Thoracic Surgery Department 1
Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 currently has 3 professors, 5 attending physicians, and 2 physicians, all of whom hold master’s degrees or higher. Among them are 2 master’s graduate supervisors. The department is committed to building a high-level thoracic surgery diagnosis and treatment center.
Keeping pace with the times, the department continually learns and applies the latest technologies and concepts. As one of the early initiators of minimally invasive thoracic surgery in the Dalian area, Department Director Liu Changhong has led the Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 team in being the first in the Dalian area to perform totally endoscopic esophageal surgery, the first to perform “single-port” video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery, the first to independently perform Da Vinci robotic thoracic surgery, and among the first to perform lung transplantation. The department rapidly became a leading force in the three northeastern provinces, with surgical techniques reaching the first-tier domestic level.
Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 applies the enhanced recovery concept, greatly shortening patients’ postoperative recovery time and length of hospital stay, reducing patients’ suffering and treatment costs, and decreasing surgical trauma and the occurrence of postoperative complications. It has been awarded the title of “Enhanced Recovery Ward of Thoracic Surgery of the Chinese Research Hospital.”
As the Dalian Medical University Lung Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment Base, the Lung Cancer Translational Medicine Center of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, and a clinical drug trial (GCP) center, Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 is committed to the full-course treatment of intermediate- and advanced-stage lung cancer. It consistently adheres to the advanced model of multidisciplinary consultation (MDT), working with the departments of oncology, respiratory medicine, radiotherapy, pathology, medical imaging, nuclear medicine, and other relevant departments to seek the possibility of cure and more survival time for patients with intermediate- and advanced-stage disease. It has also become a comprehensive lung cancer treatment center integrating multidisciplinary collaboration, immunotherapy, molecular targeted therapy, and other modalities.
Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 is the “Dalian Sub-center for Early Diagnosis of Pulmonary Nodules of the China Alliance for Lung Cancer Prevention and Treatment.” It is likewise committed to standardized diagnosis and treatment and precise surgical treatment of small pulmonary nodules. Using three-dimensional reconstruction technology combined with single-port and single-incision thoracoscopic techniques, it provides patients with standard segmentectomy and combined subsegmentectomy, reaching a new level of personalized, precise, targeted surgical treatment.
The department integrates medical care, education, and research. It undertakes multiple research projects, participates in national key scientific and technological research projects, and leads multiple research projects of the Liaoning Provincial Department of Science and Technology, the Department of Education, and the Dalian Municipal Bureau of Science and Technology. More than 30 papers have been published in core journals in China and abroad, including multiple papers indexed by SCI, and the department has received multiple national, provincial, and municipal science and technology progress awards.
Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 continually trains high-level medical professionals. Professor Lü Desheng, deputy director of the department, is an instructor who guided the Dalian Medical University team to win the special prize in the National Clinical Skills Competition for Medical Colleges and Universities. A large number of outstanding skills instructors have emerged year after year. At Department of Thoracic Surgery 1, you will experience the most standardized medical procedures.

Department of Thoracic Surgery 1 currently routinely performs single-port and single-incision thoracoscopic minimally invasive thoracic surgery, and the rate of thoracoscopic pulmonary procedures exceeds 90%. It specializes in advanced procedures including totally endoscopic (thoracoscopic combined with laparoscopic) radical esophagectomy for esophageal cancer, thoracoscopic mediastinal surgery, surgical treatment of hyperhidrosis of the hands, precise pulmonary segmentectomy and combined subsegmentectomy using three-dimensional reconstruction, radical lung cancer surgery with pulmonary artery and bronchial double-sleeve reconstruction, subxiphoid bilateral lung surgery, subxiphoid single-port surgery, chest wall reconstruction using 3D printing technology, Da Vinci robotic thoracic surgery, and lung transplantation.
