Urological Surgery Department 2
Discipline Introduction
The Department of Urology of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University was founded in 1954, with Professor Huang Hanxing, a nationally renowned urology expert, as its founder. In 1969, it moved south to Zunyi with Dalian Medical College. During this period, its research and treatment of stones, as well as techniques such as testicular transplantation, functional reconstruction of bladder exstrophy, and reconstruction of the external genitalia, were at a leading level in China. In 1983, it returned to Dalian and, under the leadership of Professor Ye Chengtong, began rebuilding the Department of Urology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical College. Through the joint efforts of Liu Yongji, Professors Li Yintian and Fan Zhilu, and other senior experts, it continued to maintain its technical advantages and academic influence in the province. Since the 1990s, it has successively developed a number of minimally invasive techniques leading in Dalian, including transurethral endoscopic minimally invasive surgery, simple laparoscopic procedures for varicocele and cryptorchidism, and ureteroscopic surgery. Since entering the 21st century, while maintaining the advantages of traditional open surgery, it has further greatly expanded the scope of minimally invasive surgery: in 2004, it began treating renal tumors with retroperitoneoscopic surgery; in 2005, it began performing percutaneous nephrolithotomy; in 2011, it began performing laparoscopic surgery for the lower urinary tract; and in 2019, it took the lead in performing da Vinci robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery in southern Liaoning. After nearly 20 years of mature development, it has now achieved full coverage of laparoscopic techniques in the treatment of urological diseases. Laparoscopic radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, laparoscopic total cystectomy, laparoscopic nephron-sparing surgery for complex renal tumors, laparoscopic reconstructive surgery for urinary tract malformations, laparoscopic total pelvic organ resection, laparoscopic retroperitoneal and inguinal lymph node dissection, da Vinci robot-assisted treatment of complex renal cancer with vena cava tumor thrombus, combined two-endoscope treatment of complex renal stones, and enucleation for giant prostatic hyperplasia have become routine procedures in the department and have reached an advanced level in China.
At present, the department has 89 approved beds and is divided into four specialty directions: urinary tract tumors and robotics; minimally invasive urology and stones; urinary tract tumors and the lower urinary tract; and andrology, male reproduction, intimate aesthetics, and sexual medicine. It has four wards and 26 doctors, including 9 professors and 8 associate professors; all have master's degrees or higher. There are 3 doctoral supervisors and 5 master's supervisors. The department's expert team and core personnel have all studied or received further training at renowned medical centers in Europe and the United States, such as Massachusetts General Hospital of Harvard University in the United States, Cleveland, the University of Pennsylvania, Heidelberg in Germany, and leading hospitals in China. The department handles more than 30,000 outpatient visits and more than 3,000 inpatient surgeries annually, of which major and medium-sized surgeries account for 70%, while minimally invasive surgeries account for more than 90%.
In recent years, under the leadership of President Liu Zhiyu, the discipline leader, and through the joint efforts of Discipline Director Li Xiancheng, subspecialty directors Yang Bo and Jiang Tao, and Professor Wang Liang, the discipline has achieved further rapid development and substantial progress. It has successively been granted the Dalian Municipal Key Laboratory for Prostate Cancer and the Liaoning Provincial Engineering Research Center for Integrated Precision Diagnosis and Treatment Technology for Urological Tumors, and has become a unit serving on the national committees of the Surgical Branch and Andrology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, the chairing unit for the Andrology Branch and Enhanced Recovery After Surgery Branch of the Liaoning Medical Association, and the incoming chairing unit for Dalian Municipal Urology.
The urology team of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University has conducted extensive basic and clinical research on the pathogenesis, early diagnosis, and comprehensive treatment of bladder cancer, prostate cancer, kidney cancer, urinary tract stones, and prostatic hyperplasia, and undertakes multiple national-, provincial-, and municipal-level scientific research projects. Among these, clinical studies related to “The Clinical Application of an Orthotopic Neobladder after Laparoscopic Total Cystectomy,” “Nerve-Sparing Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy for Prostate Cancer,” and “The Application of Anatomical Planes in Laparoscopic Total Cystectomy” were separately awarded provincial and municipal Science and Technology Progress Awards. The tumor MDT team has entered the Top 100 Urology list of Chinese hospitals; the stone team established the Northeast China Stone Disease Prevention and Treatment Base—Dalian Center, and the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University is also the Pediatric Urinary Stone Diagnosis and Treatment Collaboration Center of the China Urinary Stone Alliance. The department was the first in the province to perform prostate enucleation and male urethral reconstruction surgery, and established Dalian's first perioperative pelvic floor rehabilitation treatment center. Many experts in the department are invited every year to give lectures and participate in surgical exchanges on high-end academic platforms in China. The “Minimally Invasive Xinghai Summit Forum,” held by the department for five consecutive years, attracts many renowned domestic experts every year to provide guidance and exchange ideas, and has become an influential signature conference in China!
