Acute Abdominal Surgery Department
As the first hospital in Dalian to establish acute abdomen as an independent specialty separate from general surgery, the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University officially established its Department of Acute Abdomen Surgery in 2013. The department specializes in treating critical and life-threatening abdominal emergencies as well as complex and difficult-to-treat diseases, bringing countless patients back from the brink of death.
The Department of Acute Abdomen Surgery undertakes emergency treatment for the vast majority of patients with critical and life-threatening abdominal surgical conditions in southern Liaoning. Acute hepatobiliary and pancreatic diseases, gastrointestinal diseases, massive intra-abdominal hemorrhage and obstruction caused by complex tumors, and various types of severe abdominal trauma can all be rapidly diagnosed and treated within a few hours. The department admits approximately 2,000 patients annually, including 500 critically ill patients, and minimally invasive procedures account for more than 70%. In recent years, through unremitting efforts, the Department of Acute Abdomen Surgery has also made substantial progress in the field of abdominal tumor surgery. The department implements the ERAS (Enhanced Recovery After Surgery) concept, with minimally invasive treatment of acute abdominal pain diseases as its primary focus. It has become proficient in performing da Vinci robotic gastrointestinal tumor surgery, totally laparoscopic radical resection of rectal cancer and left- and right-sided colon cancer, totally laparoscopic radical gastrectomy, and totally laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy, among other procedures, and has extensive surgical experience in treating complex giant intra-abdominal and retroperitoneal tumors. It received the Liaoning Provincial Medical Science and Technology Award for taking the lead in using surgical techniques combined with multiple new technologies to treat acute complex intestinal obstruction. In addition, the department performs laparoscopic resection for traumatic splenic rupture and laparoscopic repair of liver rupture, and specializes in percutaneous nephroscopic treatment, laparoscopic treatment, and CT- and ultrasound-guided puncture treatment for severe acute pancreatitis, all of which have received widespread acclaim within the profession.
Building on continuous advances in diagnostic and treatment techniques and the accumulation of clinical experience, the Department of Acute Abdomen Surgery actively participates in various competitions and has successively won honors including the national championship in the Acute Abdomen Case Competition, the runner-up award in the Laparoscopic Colon Cancer Video Competition, and the championship in the northern division of the Laparoscopic Hernia Repair Competition.
