Laboratory Medicine

The Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University, established in 1963, is a clinical laboratory integrating medical care, education, and research. The Department of Laboratory Medicine comprises six professional groups: the Biochemistry Group, Immunology Group, Microbiology Group, Cell Morphology Group, Clinical Laboratory Group, and Emergency Laboratory Group; it also has three subspecialties: the Department of Transfusion Medicine, the Flow Cytometry Testing Center, and the Molecular Diagnostic Testing Center. In accordance with the quality policy of “accuracy, impartiality, efficiency, and satisfaction,” it successfully passed the ISO15189 laboratory accreditation of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment in 2016. Over the past decade, the department has undertaken multiple research projects of the state, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the provincial and municipal governments; it has undertaken the teaching of laboratory medicine for postgraduate and undergraduate students of Dalian Medical University, as well as the national training of resident physicians in laboratory medicine.

The Department of Laboratory Medicine currently has more than 140 large instruments and pieces of equipment, including large fully automated biochemical analyzers, fully automated immunoassay analyzers, and hematology analyzers at an advanced domestic level, and conducts 420 test items. The Department of Laboratory Medicine is a clinical research laboratory under the National 863 Program and the provincial central laboratory of the China HbA1c Consistency Program. The Flow Cytometry Testing Center is a member of the China Clinical Flow Cytometry Alliance and the only BD flow cytometry application training base in Northeast China.

Development of the Talent development structure

The department currently has 85 employees:

Educational qualifications of personnel: 8 doctoral degree holders, 2 doctoral students currently enrolled, 35 master’s degree holders, and 30 bachelor’s degree holders.

Professional titles of personnel: 14 senior professionals at the highest rank, 18 associate senior professionals, 27 intermediate-level professionals, and 26 junior professionals; 4 master’s supervisors; 18 staff members undertaking teaching; 45 holders of teacher qualification certificates; 20 holders of certificates for faculty of standardized resident physician training; and 9 holders of physician qualification certificates.

Research and Teaching

The Department of Laboratory Medicine has always been at the forefront of discipline development in the region. Since 2015, the department has undertaken 1 subproject of the National 863 Program, 4 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 project of the Natural Science Foundation of Liaoning Province, 4 projects of the Department of Education of Liaoning Province, and 4 Dalian municipal projects. Department staff have published 22 SCI-indexed papers as first or corresponding authors and 54 papers in Chinese journals, participated in compiling 9 books of various types, and held 47 academic positions at various levels.

The department is the teaching and research section of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics and the standardized training base for clinical physicians of Dalian Medical University. It undertakes the teaching tasks for the clinical “5+3” integrated program and the five-year undergraduate program. It is also an internship base for the School of Laboratory Medicine and Zhongshan College of Dalian Medical University, and guides more than 20 student graduation theses each year. The department has 4 master’s supervisors and has cumulatively trained more than 20 master’s students. The department has developed a complete and mature teaching team, providing talent for the development of medical laboratory science.

Quality Management System and Laboratory Accreditation

In accordance with the quality policy of “accuracy, impartiality, efficiency, and satisfaction,” and based on CNAS-CL02: 2012, Medical Laboratory Quality and Competence Accreditation Criteria (ISO15189: 2012, IDT), as well as the Ailibi Hospital Management Elements, the quality management system was established and put into operation in August 2015. In 2016, it successfully passed the ISO15189 laboratory accreditation of the China National Accreditation Service for Conformity Assessment, marking that the Department of Laboratory Medicine had reached the industry standard for international mutual recognition of laboratory results.

Fulfilling Social Responsibility and Playing a Leading Role in the Discipline

On November 1, 2019, the Department of Laboratory Medicine of our hospital became the institution responsible for the new term of the Dalian Clinical Laboratory Management and Quality Control Center.

On January 20, 2020, the Department of Laboratory Medicine of our hospital was approved as the institution of the new term of the Dalian Medical Association’s Laboratory Medicine Branch to hold the position of chairing unit.

Under the guidance and assistance of the Medical Administration and Hospital Administration Division of the Dalian Municipal Health Commission, and together with laboratory colleagues from medical institutions throughout Dalian, the department jointly participated in and completed the medical administration supervision and inspection of laboratories in medical institutions in Dalian. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Laboratory Quality Control Center organized experts on multiple occasions to conduct supervision and inspections of various nucleic acid testing laboratories. It also organized experts on multiple occasions to conduct practical-operation assessments and skills training for PCR qualification certificates for technical personnel of gene amplification laboratories, ensuring the quality and safety of nucleic acid testing laboratories.

Inspired by the spirit of the hospital motto “revering virtue and honoring medicine,” all employees of the Department of Laboratory Medicine of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University will certainly uphold the quality policy of “accuracy, impartiality, efficiency, and satisfaction,” diligently pursue and continuously advance along the path of development of laboratory medicine.
