Nuclear Medicine
The Department of Nuclear Medicine of the Second Hospital of Dalian Medical University was established in 1958. Since its establishment, through the diligent efforts of several generations of nuclear medicine professionals, it has achieved remarkable accomplishments in medical care, research, and teaching. In recent years, through the joint efforts of all medical, technical, pharmaceutical, and nursing staff, it has developed into a comprehensive clinical department with advanced equipment, a well-structured talent pool, and radioactive nuclide imaging diagnosis and treatment as its specialty, integrating medical care, teaching, research, and health education.
Distinctive Technologies
The department is currently equipped with one integrated PET/MR scanner, one PET/CT scanner, a cyclotron and radioactive pharmaceutical synthesis module, two SPECT/CT scanners, a thyroid function analyzer, a γ-radioimmunoassay counter, a carbon-14 Helicobacter pylori detector, two dual-energy X-ray bone densitometers, one small-animal PET scanner, and other large- and medium-sized clinical and research equipment. It routinely performs molecular imaging examinations, including whole-body tumor imaging with multiple tracers, brain functional imaging with multiple tracers, stress myocardial perfusion imaging, myocardial metabolic imaging, whole-body bone imaging, dynamic renal imaging, static thyroid imaging, parathyroid imaging, dynamic salivary gland imaging, gastrointestinal bleeding imaging, and orbital tomographic imaging.
Radionuclide therapy is a traditional specialty of the department, which is also one of the earliest institutions in China to carry out this treatment. Radioactive iodine has been used to cure thousands of patients with hyperthyroidism, and the radionuclide therapy ward is capable of admitting patients with differentiated thyroid cancer for postoperative iodine therapy. In addition, the department also performs selective internal radiation therapy with yttrium-90 microspheres for liver tumors, strontium-89 treatment for bone metastases from malignant tumors, strontium-90 application therapy for hemangiomas and keloids, iodine-125 seed implantation therapy, technetium-99 methylene diphosphonate therapy for hyperthyroid exophthalmos and rheumatoid arthritis, and osteoporosis treatment, among other treatment programs.
Professional Team
The department has a highly skilled and professionally qualified technical team, comprising 40 medical, technical, pharmaceutical, and nursing staff members, including 1 master's degree graduate student supervisor, 4 doctors with doctoral degrees, and 8 staff members with senior professional titles. Academic appointments include committee member of the Extracorporeal Group of the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association, standing committee member of the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Liaoning Medical Association, standing committee member of the Medical Imaging Physicians Branch of the Liaoning Medical Doctors Association, incoming chair of the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Dalian Medical Association, chair of the Nuclear Medicine Physicians Branch of the Dalian Medical Doctors Association, standing committee member of the Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging Professional Committee of the China Association of Non-Public Medical Institutions, and committee member of the Expert Committee on Bone Density Measurement and Osteoporosis Diagnosis of the China Health Promotion Foundation. Department members also serve as editorial board members or young editorial board members of multiple journals, including Chinese Journal of Osteoporosis, Chinese Journal of Biomedical Engineering, China Medicine and Pharmacy, Meta-Radiology, Cancer Advances, Medicine Advances, Cancer Innovation, and Intelligent Oncology. The department is currently an ISCD collaborative training base for bone density measurement and osteoporosis diagnosis of the China Health Promotion Foundation. It regularly organizes ISCD training courses each year and hosts the ISCD China Annual Conference.
Scientific and Technological Innovation
The department currently has a molecular imaging and radionuclide therapy laboratory. It undertakes two projects funded by the Natural Science Foundation of Liaoning Province and two projects under the Dalian Science and Technology Plan. It has published more than 50 papers, including more than 30 indexed in SCI, compiled multiple textbooks and monographs, and applied for multiple service invention and utility model patents. The department conducts academic exchanges and shares experience on multiple high-level academic platforms in China. It has repeatedly won second and third prizes in science popularization competitions organized by the Nuclear Medicine Branch of the Chinese Medical Association and the Nuclear Medicine Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctors Association, third prize in PET/CT image interpretation competitions, and second and third prizes in teaching competitions of Dalian Medical University.
