Oral Medicine
Founded in 1989, the Department of Stomatology is a long-established traditional department integrating medical care, teaching, research, and prevention. Its spacious, bright clinic design, standardized and orderly infection-control practices, comfortable and safe treatment philosophy, and commitment to technical excellence have kept it at the forefront in the city. The department has a dedicated team of clinical and nursing professionals with extensive experience. It currently has 37 medical and nursing staff members, including 4 professors, 6 associate professors, 10 attending physicians, 5 physicians, 9 nurses, and 3 technicians. They graduated in dental specialties from Okayama University in Japan, West China University of Medical Sciences, Beijing Medical University, China Medical University, and other prestigious universities in China. Its specialties include operative dentistry and endodontics, oral surgery, prosthodontics, orthodontics, implant dentistry, periodontology, pediatric dentistry, and other fields; its overall capabilities are strong.
To better fulfill the department’s leading role in the city’s oral health services, while continuously improving our medical standards, we focus closely on medical quality and service philosophy. We strictly implement disinfection and isolation protocols to ensure the safety of medical and nursing care. We adhere to the principle of “putting patients at the center and making quality the core,” and maintain strict quality control. In our clinical work, we not only provide the best possible service but also carry out oral health education, enabling the many patients we serve to receive more standardized and humane services and treatment. Outpatient triage nurses carefully manage initial and follow-up visits and appointments, greatly reducing patients’ time spent seeking care.
The dental outpatient clinic mainly diagnoses and treats various diseases involving the teeth and pulp, periodontium, oral mucosa, prosthodontic conditions, orthodontic conditions, and other diseases. High-end filling materials are used to restore various tooth defects. We have introduced modern concepts in root canal therapy and provide thorough root canal treatment. Painless dental cleaning and subgingival scaling allow patients to remain comfortable during periodontal treatment, so they are no longer afraid of dental cleaning. For the restoration of damaged or missing teeth, we provide removable partial dentures, complete dentures, porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns, all-ceramic crowns, CAD/CAM zirconia restorations, fiber posts, esthetic veneers, and other prosthetic restorations. We have introduced immediate restoration, with chairside procedures and immediate delivery of the prosthesis. The development of dental implant treatment has brought an entirely new restorative concept to patients with missing teeth throughout the city. We use “autologous tooth-derived bone powder grafting”—that is, converting the patient’s own teeth into bone graft material and placing it in the area of bone loss for bone repair—which has achieved very good treatment results. In orthodontics, we continuously improve and refine the use of various treatment methods and appliances. In particular, the vigorous development of invisible orthodontics and the application of “microimplant anchorage technology” have greatly improved the orthodontic treatment process and outcomes. The oral surgery outpatient clinic is responsible for extracting routine and complex teeth, lip and tongue frenulum correction, surgical excision of small maxillofacial masses, suturing of simple injuries, and other procedures.
The department has a dental CT scanner imported from the United States (cone-beam CBCT), I-TERO and other imported scanners, fully automated equipment for producing autologous tooth-derived bone powder, an electronic apex locator imported from the United States, imported root canal enlargement equipment, imported dental cleaning equipment and periodontal probing instruments, CAD-CAM equipment, imported subgingival scalers, 19 advanced modern comprehensive dental treatment chairs, periapical radiography equipment, and various other advanced devices.
Establishment and Development of the Department
In 1989, the Department of Stomatology established a dental cosmetology center with 6 comprehensive treatment chairs, 1 dental laboratory, and 1 oral imaging room. In 1991, the department’s teaching work took responsibility for clinical teaching in operative dentistry and orthodontics.
In 1997, the inpatient building was completed and put into use. The department’s area expanded fourfold, and consultation rooms for oral medicine, oral surgery, prosthodontics, pediatric dentistry, and a dental laboratory were opened.
In 2004, the new outpatient building was put into use. The area of the dental outpatient clinic expanded to more than 500 square meters, and the number of treatment chairs increased to 17. The dental laboratory was organized into a laboratory, a porcelain room, and a casting room, meeting the needs of restorative clinical work. The annual outpatient volume reached 19623 patient-visits.
In 2010, the comprehensive treatment chairs were updated with small negative-pressure suction devices, reducing the dust and opportunities for infection generated during dental treatment.
In 2014, the Department of Stomatology cooperated with the Korean company anchor株式会社 to establish an “International Oral Cooperation Base.”
In 2015, China’s first “Tooth Bank” was established in the Department of Stomatology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University.
In 2012, on the basis of the existing structure, the department was divided into subspecialties and established clinical pathways for multiple diseases in each subspecialty. The subspecialties are endodontics, prosthodontics, orthodontics, alveolar surgery, dental implantology, periodontology, and pediatric dentistry.
