Ophthalmology Ward
The Department of Ophthalmology of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University is one of the large ophthalmic diagnosis and treatment institutions in Liaoning Province. In 2005, the department passed the qualification review for a National Clinical Drug Trial Base; in 2009, it became a national ophthalmology resident physician training base; and in 2010, it was designated a key discipline in Dalian City. The Department of Ophthalmology has 23 doctors and 28 nurses. It has 8 doctors with senior professional titles, 6 holders of doctoral degrees, 1 doctoral student supervisor, and 6 master's student supervisors. Seven experts have studied abroad. Three department experts serve as members of national professional study groups of the Ophthalmology Branch of the Chinese Medical Association. Our department was the earliest ophthalmology department in Dalian to implement subspecialization. It has strong comprehensive diagnostic and treatment capabilities, and its current services cover seven ophthalmic subspecialties:
1. Fundus Diseases and Ocular Trauma Subspecialty
The subspecialty has world-leading equipment for minimally invasive vitreoretinal surgery, angiography, and multi-wavelength laser treatment. It was the first in Dalian City to perform 25G minimally invasive vitreoretinal surgery for various blinding eye diseases, including complex retinal detachment, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusion, vitreous hemorrhage, complex ocular trauma and intraocular foreign bodies, and complex intraocular infections. It performs minimally invasive surgery for complex macular holes, epiretinal membranes, and vitreomacular traction, as well as minimally invasive vitrectomy for complex ocular trauma in children. It performs microincision phacoemulsification and intraocular lens implantation for difficult traumatic cataracts, as well as surgery for lens dislocation and reconstruction of the anterior and posterior segments after ocular trauma. It provides anti-VEGF medication and laser treatment for macular degeneration, choroidal neovascularization, macular edema, polypoidal choroidal and retinal disease, and other intractable conditions. It also provides specialized treatment for diabetic retinopathy and macular diseases.
2. Pediatric Eye Diseases, Strabismus and Refractive Errors Subspecialty
We are a leader in this field in Liaoning Province and the institution of the chairperson of the Liaoning Pediatric Eye Disease and Strabismus Committee. We established the Liaoning Pediatric Eye Disease and Strabismus Professional Alliance and assume responsibility for its chairmanship. The subspecialty has advanced femtosecond excimer laser refractive surgery equipment and was the first in Dalian City to perform femtosecond corneal refractive correction surgery, phakic intraocular lens implantation, toric intraocular lens implantation, microincision phacoemulsification for congenital cataracts, and postoperative refractive correction. It diagnoses and treats all types of complex pediatric eye diseases and performs all types of strabismus surgery. In particular, its correction of vertical strabismus and paralytic strabismus, as well as its comprehensive amblyopia training and treatment, has reached an internationally leading level.
3. Oculoplastic and Orbital Diseases Subspecialty
In 2008, the department began performing orbital surgeries, including correction of upper eyelid ptosis, implantation of a motility orbital implant for an artificial eye, reconstruction of a contracted socket, repositioning of medial canthal deformities, correction of enophthalmos, correction of orbital deformities, and excision of orbital tumors, as well as cosmetic procedures such as double-eyelid surgery and eye-bag surgery. In 2010, it was the first in Dalian City to perform orbital fracture reduction and titanium-mesh orbital-wall reconstruction at a domestically leading level. It performs endoscopic dacryocystorhinostomy. In 2015, the Orbital Disease and Oculoplastic Aesthetic Center was established, and Professor Don O Kikkwa, President of the American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, was invited to serve as the center’s guest professor.
4. Corneal and Ocular Surface Diseases Subspecialty
When the cornea is infected by microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, viruses, mites, or amoebae, it can cause keratitis, corneal ulcers, and perforation, resulting in severe visual impairment or blindness. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are crucial. This subspecialty can rapidly and accurately diagnose these conditions through bacterial and fungal cultures, mite testing, and virological examinations, and provide targeted medication to reliably improve patients’ vision. For severe infections, congenital corneal lesions, and other conditions, it performs individualized therapeutic keratoplasty and anterior-segment reconstruction to preserve patients’ visual function. This subspecialty has extensive experience in treating ocular rejection in patients after bone marrow transplantation, which is one of the department’s distinctive areas of expertise.
5. Glaucoma Subspecialty
In 2009, the “Home of Glaucoma Patients” was established as the largest glaucoma patient education group in southern Liaoning. The department was also the first in Dalian City to establish a glaucoma alliance, thereby ensuring the scientific basis of long-term follow-up and treatment for glaucoma patients. The subspecialty performs nonpenetrating trabeculectomy, combined trabecular surgery, drainage device implantation, combined glaucoma-cataract surgery, and selective laser trabeculoplasty for various difficult and complex glaucomas. In recent years, it was the first in Liaoning Province to perform canaloplasty, providing a new treatment approach for many patients with difficult and complex glaucoma.
6. Cataract Subspecialty
The department was the first in Dalian City to perform microincision cataract phacoemulsification with “painless, day-return” treatment, multifocal intraocular lens implantation, toric intraocular lens implantation, blue-light-filtering intraocular lens implantation, and aspheric intraocular lens implantation. It was the first in Northeast China to perform femtosecond laser-assisted cataract phacoemulsification, achieving precise quality control of cataract surgery.
7. Neuro-Ophthalmology Subspecialty
Neuro-ophthalmology is an emerging branch of ophthalmology that spans ophthalmology, neurology, neurosurgery, and otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, among other specialties. It mainly focuses on nervous-system diseases related to ocular sensation and movement. Every year, 5 million new neuro-ophthalmology patients are added in China, but only a few dozen doctors specialize in neuro-ophthalmology, making it an extremely understaffed field. The head of neuro-ophthalmology in our department studied neuro-ophthalmology under Professor Wei Shihui, a pioneer of neuro-ophthalmology in China. Our hospital was the first in Dalian City to establish neuro-ophthalmology services, and its diagnostic and treatment standards are aligned with those in China and abroad.
