Hematology, Diamond Bay Campus (Post-Transplant Ward)
<Department Overview>
The Hematology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University was founded in 1991. Through the dedicated efforts of several generations of hematology professors represented by Mao Yufang, Song Zhenlan, Lian Shimei, and Yan Jinsong, it has grown rapidly and is now a comprehensive hematology diagnosis and treatment center integrating medical care, teaching, and research. It is currently a doctoral and master's degree granting point in Internal Medicine (Hematology) of Dalian Medical University, a National Health Commission standard residency training base, the Liaoning Provincial Medical Center for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Clinical Translational Medicine Research in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation, the Diamond Bay Institute of Hematology, a Class I key medical discipline of Dalian, and the Dalian Key Laboratory of Hematological Diseases; it is also a hematopoietic stem cell collection unit for the China Marrow Donor Program and Taiwan's Tzu Chi Marrow Donor Registry.
The Hematology Department has 156 approved beds, including 14 Class-100 laminar-flow purification transplant wards, and comprises 5 sub-specialties and one provincial key laboratory: Hematology Department 1 (bone marrow transplantation), Hematology Department 2 (lymphoma and myeloma), Hematology Department 3 (leukemia), Hematology Department 4 (red cell diseases and hemorrhagic-thrombotic disorders), Diamond Bay Hematology (post-hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and comprehensive hematology), and the Provincial Key Laboratory (responsible for translational research on hematopoietic stem cells and gene testing of hematological diseases).
The department has a professional academic team with profound scholarship, superb medical skills, a well-structured talent pipeline, and strong comprehensive strength. At present there are 30 in-service physicians, more than 90 nurses, and 5 laboratory personnel; all physicians hold a master's degree or above, with 15 holding doctoral degrees. Supported by the Liaoning Provincial Medical Center for Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation and with bone marrow/hematopoietic stem cell transplantation technology as its peak capability, the transplanted diseases include acute leukemia, chronic leukemia, severe aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, myelofibrosis, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, hemophagocytic syndrome, and some rare congenital hereditary diseases; among them, the youngest patient treated with haploidentical allogeneic bone marrow transplantation was only 4 months old, and the oldest was 68; the transplant cure rate for acute leukemia is 60-70%, and the transplant cure rate for aplastic anemia exceeds 90%, reaching the domestic advanced level. Advanced technology and an outstanding team have earned the department recognition from peers and patients; patients from within and outside the province come seeking treatment, with 30%-40% of patients each year referred from outside Dalian, including from outside the province — Jiangsu, Jilin, Anhui, Henan, Hebei, Shandong, etc. — and within the province from Shenyang, Liaoyang, Anshan, Fushun, Jinzhou, Huludao, Chaoyang, Yingkou, Panjin and many other areas. As of April 2022, the department had completed more than 500 hematopoietic stem cell transplantations, including allogeneic HSCT, autologous stem cell transplantation, and cord blood stem cell transplantation; the number of transplants ranks first in Liaoning Province and second among the three northeastern provinces, providing scientific and professional diagnostic and treatment means for patients with hematological diseases in the region and contributing to patients' health.
The department owns the independent Dalian Key Laboratory of Hematological Diseases (leukemia direction); in 2018 it was approved as the Liaoning Provincial Key Laboratory of Clinical Translational Medicine Research in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation. Under the leadership of Director Yan Jinsong, it has established a relatively strong research system and a young, promising research team. The laboratory routinely performs cytogenetics, genetic diagnosis, and immunological testing, and has established research methods such as whole transcriptome sequencing, proteome analysis, and patient-derived xenograft (PDX) mouse models of human leukemia/lymphoma to study the pathogenesis and treatment mechanisms of hematological malignancies such as leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma; research guided by new fusion genes in leukemia as new molecular markers has yielded fruitful scientific results. In recent years, the proportion of doctoral degree holders in the department has exceeded 50%; the department undertakes 8 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 Liaoning Province key R&D project, 8 provincial Natural Science Foundation and doctoral start-up projects, 1 provincial hospital reform key clinical construction project, and 2 Dalian science and technology innovation projects, with total funding exceeding 10 million yuan; team members have published more than 20 English papers, with a single-paper maximum impact factor of 31 and cumulative impact factor greater than 500.
<Specialty Overview>
Diamond Bay Hematology is the largest sub-specialty of the Hematology Department of the Second Affiliated Hospital, with 70 beds, including 6 transplant wards and 47 simple laminar-flow beds. Medical, nursing, and laboratory personnel are all composed of outstanding staff from the main campus, achieving homogenized quality of medical care and nursing across the sub-specialty. There are 7 physicians, including 1 chief physician and 1 associate chief physician, all with master's degrees or above, including 1 with a doctoral degree and 2 doctoral students in training. The nursing team of more than 30 includes 1 associate chief nurse and 13 nurse-in-charges, all with bachelor's degrees. Diamond Bay Hematology mainly engages in the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up of patients after allogeneic HSCT; it performs allogeneic HSCT for various leukemias and other malignant hematological diseases, aplastic anemia, myelodysplastic syndromes, congenital hereditary blood diseases, and hereditary bone marrow failure syndromes; autologous HSCT for multiple myeloma and refractory/relapsed malignant lymphoma; cellular immunotherapy (CAR-T) for refractory/relapsed acute lymphoblastic leukemia, refractory/relapsed lymphoma, and multiple myeloma; Diamond Bay Hematology is a comprehensive hematology department that also admits all types of hematological system diseases, such as myeloproliferative diseases, red cell diseases, and hemorrhagic-thrombotic disorders.
The department also undertakes teaching for undergraduates, master's and doctoral students, standardized training trainees, and advanced-study physicians, having trained nearly 30 standardized training trainees. The department undertakes 2 projects funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 1 Liaoning Province key R&D project, 2 provincial Natural Science Foundation and doctoral start-up projects, and 1 Dalian science and technology innovation project, with total funding exceeding 3 million yuan; team members have published more than 10 English papers.
