Jinpu Campus General Surgery Department

The General Surgery Department of the Jinpu Campus of the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University was established in 2004. It is the Dalian Medical University Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery Diagnosis and Treatment Center, the Liaoning Medical Association Surgery Branch Inguinal Hernia Multicenter Clinical Trial Base, a member institution of the China Day Surgery Alliance, the Hernia Disease Treatment and Research Center of the China Hernia Specialist Alliance registry/follow-up system, and the Liaoning Health Education Demonstration Base and Hernia and Abdominal Wall Surgery Health Education Base. It has 42 officially open beds and 13 full-time physicians: 3 professors/chief physicians, 3 associate professors, 6 attending physicians and 1 resident. There are 3 master’s supervisors, 6 doctors and 2 masters, and 3 graduate students currently enrolled. Many staff have studied abroad; 4 serve on national or provincial professional societies, and 3 are editors or invited editors of national professional journals.

The department averages more than 37,000 outpatient visits and more than 1,800 operations annually. It treats diseases throughout general surgery and is particularly renowned for hernia and abdominal-wall conditions (recurrent hernia, complex abdominal-wall hernia and defects) and comprehensive treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies. Laparoscopic minimally invasive treatment of bile-duct and pancreatic tumors, other hepatobiliary disease, gastric and colorectal malignancies, minimally invasive PPH hemorrhoid surgery, tension-free laparoscopic inguinal-hernia repair, thyroid malignancy surgery and breast-conserving surgery for breast cancer are at leading or advanced domestic levels. In recent years it has performed minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery for inguinal, parastomal, incisional, umbilical and hiatal hernias; case volume is the highest in southern Liaoning, with excellent results and leading national standards. It pioneered totally laparoscopic pancreaticoduodenectomy in Dalian and receives high public praise. It also pioneered day surgery in Dalian, developing a 24–48-hour admission/discharge model centered on hernia, thyroid and breast tumors. Day-surgery volume ranks among the best in the three northeastern provinces.

The department exchanges and cooperates substantively with renowned hospitals in China and abroad, including Florida Hospital Surgical Center, the surgical center of Pavlov State Medical University Hospital in St. Petersburg, Japan’s Dokkyo Medical University Surgical Center, PLA 301 Hospital in Beijing, Beijing Chaoyang Hospital, Southern Medical University Nanfang Hospital and the First Affiliated Hospital of Jinan University.

It undertakes projects from the National Natural Science Foundation, provincial science and education commissions, the Wu Jieping Medical Foundation and municipal science commissions, with cumulative research funding over RMB 1 million. It has won provincial government first and third prizes for scientific progress and Dalian scientific progress awards, published dozens of SCI and national papers, and participated in monographs totaling over one million Chinese characters. It has taken part in more than 100 domestic and international academic exchanges and provides undergraduate, master’s, standardized resident, standardized general-surgery specialist and visiting-doctor training. Excellent undergraduates, masters and doctors are sent overseas for study and exchange, cultivating young core surgeons.
