Its research projects include grants from the International Society for Internal Fixation, National Natural Science Foundation of China projects, National Ninth Five-Year Plan key scientific and technological research projects, the State Education Commission’s Fund for Returned Personnel to Initiate Research, the National Scientific Research Fund for Overseas Study for Personnel Outside the Education System, major research projects of the Provincial Commission of Science and Technology, projects of the Provincial Education Commission, and projects of the Municipal Commission of Science and Technology. It has received 2 second prizes and 4 third prizes for provincial scientific and technological progress, 1 third prize for provincial teaching achievements, and 3 first prizes for Dalian scientific and technological progress.
It has successively established friendly-hospital relationships with hospitals in Switzerland, the United States, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and other countries and regions, and has repeatedly sent key professional staff to these partner hospitals for further training and advanced study.
The department has comprehensively introduced the internal fixation techniques of the International Society for Internal Fixation and the most advanced internal fixation materials worldwide. Fracture treatment techniques have reached advanced international standards and occupy a leading position in China. Among them, the four-column theory for tibial Pilon fractures proposed by Director Tang Xin, Professor Wang Manyi, and others has been recognized by international peers. The series of locking plates designed and applied according to this theory for treating tibial Pilon fractures holds an internationally leading position. Reconstructive surgery for lumbosacral fractures; minimally invasive plate treatment of complex pelvic and acetabular fractures; treatment of multiple complex fractures of the extremities; minimally invasive intramedullary nailing for peritrochanteric fractures in elderly patients with osteoporosis; minimally invasive plate osteosynthesis (MIPO) and minimally invasive intramedullary nailing techniques for femoral and tibial shaft and metaphyseal fractures; treatment of complex foot and ankle injuries; surgical treatment of periprosthetic fractures; and revision surgery for complex nonunions, as well as bone transport techniques for treating infected nonunions and bone defects, have all reached an advanced level in China.
