Laboratory Medicine

The Clinical Laboratory is a comprehensive modern clinical laboratory integrating medicine, teaching and research. It is one of the important clinical medical-technology departments of the First Affiliated Hospital of Dalian Medical University and undertakes the clinical laboratory work of the entire hospital. To meet the needs of clinical diagnosis, treatment and emergency care, the department is divided into 6 sub-specialties: clinical basic laboratory testing, clinical chemistry testing, clinical immunology testing, clinical microbiology testing, clinical molecular diagnostics testing and clinical emergency testing.

Each year the laboratory completes more than 2.3 million person-times of various test reports, totalling more than 32 million test items, and owns various advanced testing instruments worth more than 50 million yuan. At present there are 106 technical personnel in total, including 20 chief technologists and 21 deputy chief technologists; 13 with doctoral degrees and 3 doctoral students in progress, while those with a master's degree or above reach 48. The Teaching and Research Section of Laboratory Diagnostics of Dalian Medical University is based in the laboratory, and the director of the department concurrently serves as director of the teaching and research section. Each year it undertakes more than 700 class hours of teaching tasks for multiple programmes including international students, the 5+3 integrated programme and the five-year undergraduate programme, and is also responsible for the production internship work of the School of Laboratory Medicine of Dalian Medical University, the Higher Vocational College and the Department of Laboratory Medicine of Dalian University, guiding the completion of more than 10 undergraduate graduation theses each year.

The scientific research work of the laboratory has made breakthrough progress since 2005: it has successively led 3 projects of the National Natural Science Foundation of China, 4 sub-projects of the national 973 and 863 programmes, 7 Natural Science Foundation projects of the Science and Technology Department of Liaoning Province, 5 projects of the Education Department of Liaoning Province and 5 scientific research projects of the Dalian Municipal Science and Technology Bureau, with cumulative research funding of more than 1.5 million yuan. It has successively participated in a number of National Natural Science Foundation projects, and 4 of them won respectively the second prize and the third prize for scientific and technological progress of the Liaoning Provincial Government and the second prize for scientific and technological progress of the Dalian Municipal Government. The laboratory currently has 1 doctoral supervisor and 7 master's supervisors, and has successively trained more than 20 doctoral and master's students, forming a relatively complete, echelon-based teaching and training operating system. It has been chief editor or contributing editor of more than 20 monographs, and has published more than 100 papers in core journals, including more than 20 SCI papers and more than 20 papers in Chinese Medical Association series journals.

The laboratory continuously tracks cutting-edge technologies at home and abroad, introduces equipment and talent, strengthens laboratory quality management, keeps its testing level at the domestic advanced level and enjoys a relatively high reputation among domestic peers. In September 2003, the genetic diagnosis laboratory of the department was the first to pass the national-level certification of the Ministry of Health, becoming the first and only laboratory in Dalian able to quantitatively detect viral genes, and in 2009 it smoothly passed the re-evaluation of the National Center for Clinical Laboratories of the Ministry of Health.

In 2006 it was rated as a first-level key discipline of Dalian, becoming the only key discipline of this specialty in Dalian, and in the same year it was approved as a training base for laboratory physicians of the Ministry of Health. In 2013 it smoothly passed the on-site assessment for ISO15189 medical laboratory quality and competence accreditation, marking that the laboratory has reached the industry's highest standard for international mutual recognition of test results. In the specialty rankings released by the Hospital Management Institute of Fudan University in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018, our department achieved the good results of fifth place in Northeast China and third place within the province.

'Accurate and timely, scientific management, continuous improvement, serving the clinic' is the quality policy of the laboratory. We will continue to take quality as the benchmark, service as the foundation and science as the principle, and provide timely, accurate and high-quality services for patients, clinical departments, teaching and research. On the basis of continuously improving the level of medical laboratory testing, we will strive to build the department into a domestic first-class standardized laboratory!
