Pediatric Eye Diseases

This specialty mainly treats various types of strabismus in children and adults, refractive errors in children, amblyopia, common pediatric eye diseases, and so on. The specialty has specially appointed Professor Lin Xiaoming of the Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center of Sun Yat-sen University to see patients in clinic; the team also includes several foreign consultants, associate chief physicians, and attending physicians. Depending on the type of strabismus, corresponding treatments include spectacle correction, vision training, occlusion therapy, and strabismus surgery. Clinically, only a small proportion of patients with strabismus can achieve a certain degree of control through nonsurgical methods; most patients still require surgical correction. The strabismus surgeries performed by the specialty include microscope-assisted surgery for common strabismus and vertical strabismus, as well as other complex procedures, including strabismus correction surgery involving the oblique muscles and procedures specifically targeting paralytic strabismus. For pediatric refractive errors, the specialty establishes visual development records for children receiving care and, by recording and analyzing ocular development parameters such as axial length, corneal curvature, and corneal endothelium, implements interventions to prevent the onset and progression of myopia. At the same time, the specialty is equipped with a synoptophore, computers, and other visual function training equipment to help children undergo rehabilitation training for amblyopia and related conditions.
