Pediatric Congenital Cataract
Congenital cataracts are a major cause of blindness in children. To help more children with cataracts receive standardized, individualized clinical treatment, Shenzhen C-MER (Lin Shun-Chao) Eye Hospital established a special pediatric cataract clinic to provide timely care. Pediatric cataracts must be treated promptly; surgery later may provide little benefit. International practice generally recommends removing the cataract and implanting an intraocular lens whenever possible in patients over 6 months old. The younger the child, the more difficult lens implantation is; in China, the usual practice is to implant the lens after age 2.
