General Surgery · Gastrointestinal Surgery
General Surgery was initially established by experts from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Beijing Hospital and other renowned top-tier tertiary hospitals in Beijing, and the department has successively been known as General Surgery, General Surgery II (Gastrointestinal), Gastrointestinal Surgery (Gastrointestinal Tumor Center), General Surgery Division I (Gastrointestinal), and Gastrointestinal Surgery, and has now become a nationally renowned department. The successive department chiefs were Vice President Pan Ruiqin, Kong Qingwen, Jia Zhengeng and Professor Wang Wenyue, the current department head is Professor Zhou Lei, and the head nurse is Liu Yufen. The department currently has 3 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, 5 attending physicians, 1 resident physician and 1 technician, including 8 doctoral degree holders and 6 master's degree holders. The department has 18 nurses, including 2 master's degree holders, 1 chief nurse, 4 nurse supervisors, 10 nurse practitioners and 3 nurses.
Outpatient clinics and inpatient wards:
The department has 45 beds and provides General Surgery, Gastrointestinal Surgery and Thyroid and Breast Surgery outpatient clinics, as well as specialty outpatient clinics for gastrointestinal tumors, gastric tumors, gastric and esophageal reflux surgery, colorectal tumor surgery, minimally invasive surgery for obesity and type 2 diabetes, minimally invasive surgery for appendiceal diseases, breast diseases, laparoscopic minimally invasive hernia repair, and other specialized conditions. Multidisciplinary joint outpatient clinic for digestive tract tumors.
Introduction to diagnostic and treatment equipment: The department has advanced instruments and equipment including Storz high-definition laparoscopes, Storz single-port laparoscopes, the Johnson & Johnson ultrasonic scalpel and Coviden energy platform, Olympus high-definition gastrointestinal endoscopes, and the fourth-generation Xi da Vinci surgical robot.
Departmental diagnostic and treatment specialties: The department focuses on the surgical treatment of gastrointestinal surgical diseases. The number of operations and quality of treatment rank among the highest in Beijing. It has longstanding strengths in treating common gastrointestinal surgical diseases, greater expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of difficult gastrointestinal surgical diseases, and medical technology at an advanced level nationally.
With reference to the NCCN Guidelines, ESMO Guidelines, Japanese Treatment Rules for Colorectal Cancer, Japanese Gastric Cancer Treatment Guidelines, Japanese Rules for the Management of Gastric Cancer, Chinese Standards for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Colorectal Cancer, Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Gastric Cancer, Chinese Society of Clinical Oncology (CSCO) Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Colorectal Cancer, and other normative documents, multidisciplinary team discussions (MDT) are organized for difficult cases to formulate individualized treatment plans. Preoperative neoadjuvant radiotherapy, chemotherapy and conversion therapy are provided for malignant gastrointestinal tumors, achieving preoperative tumor downstaging or successful conversion to surgery, thereby increasing the surgical resection rate and improving patient prognosis.
Surgically, standardized operations for gastrointestinal tumors are routinely performed, including total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer (TME), transanal total mesorectal excision for rectal cancer (Ta-TME), rectal cancer surgery preserving the pelvic autonomic nerves (PANP), lateral lymph node dissection for rectal cancer, sphincter-preserving surgery for ultra-low rectal cancer, and standard radical gastrectomy. Minimally invasive gastrointestinal tumor operations such as totally laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer and colorectal cancer are actively performed. Laparoscopic minimally invasive treatment improves surgical quality and reduces patient suffering. Laparoscopic bariatric surgery is performed to treat obesity and type 2 diabetes; while reducing weight, it also effectively treats metabolic syndrome, with stable results after surgery. Single-port, reduced-port, transanal and laparoscopic surgeries without abdominal incisions are performed to minimize patient trauma. The theory of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) is used to guide clinical work, enabling patients to recover quickly with less pain and lower costs. Minimally invasive techniques are used for hernia repair, and laparoscopic hernia repair is routinely performed for incisional hernia, indirect hernia, direct hernia and hiatal hernia; patients recover quickly after surgery and have a low recurrence rate. The combined intraoperative use of laparoscopy and gastrointestinal endoscopy reduces trauma. More than 800 gastric and colorectal tumor operations are performed each year. More than 300 patients with super obesity or obesity accompanied by severe comorbidities are successfully diagnosed and treated each year.
The department also provides diagnosis and treatment for common and frequently occurring diseases in General Surgery, including thyroid surgery, breast surgery and hepatobiliary surgery, with satisfactory treatment outcomes.
