Radiation Oncology Department
The Department of Radiation Oncology at China-Japan Friendship Hospital was founded in 1985 under the leadership of Professor Zhong Yubin, a renowned Chinese expert in radiation oncology. It was one of the earliest radiation therapy departments established independently in a general hospital in China. Radiation oncology specialists Fan Zhaosheng, Zhou Wei, Tang Jintian, Liu Pifu, Wang Jiying, and others successively served as department directors, deputy directors, or heads. The current department director is Chief Physician Zhu Guangying, who also serves as Executive Deputy Director of the Lung Cancer Center of China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Professor at Peking University, doctoral supervisor, the first director of the Department of Radiation Oncology of Peking University Health Science Center, and Deputy Director of the Department of Oncology at Beijing University of Chinese Medicine. The department's areas of distinction include differential diagnosis of pulmonary nodules, precision radiotherapy for early-stage lung cancer, and precision radiotherapy combined with targeted therapy, immunotherapy, and other treatments for middle- and advanced-stage lung cancer.
After more than 30 years of development and construction, the department has established a complete professional system of radiation oncology and built a comprehensive professional team consisting of physicians, radiologic technologists, medical physicists, and nurses, providing first-class professional services to patients with cancer.
The department was among the first in China to implement CT-based localization, three-dimensional conformal radiotherapy, isocentric radiotherapy, multileaf collimator conformal radiotherapy, intraoperative radiotherapy, ultrasound-assisted localization, deep hyperthermia, and stereotactic radiotherapy. It currently possesses the country's leading tomotherapy (TOMOTherapy) technology and has extensive experience in precisely protecting the heart, lungs, liver, and intestines during treatment of thoracic and abdominal tumors, while taking into account both treatment efficacy and patient safety. Our hospital is introducing proton radiotherapy technology at an internationally advanced level.
The department currently serves as the chair institution of the Precision Radiotherapy Branch of the Chinese Society of Biomedical Engineering and the Radiotherapy Branch of the Beijing Anti-Cancer Association; the deputy-chair institution of the Oncology Radiotherapy Physicians Branch of the Chinese Medical Doctor Association; the chair institution of the Lung Cancer Expert Committee of the National Telemedicine and Internet Medical Center; the deputy-chair institution of the National Radiotherapy Quality Control Center; the joint chief-editor institution for the first and second editions of the national standardized resident training textbook Radiation Oncology; and the chief-editor institution for the Ministry of Education textbook Radiation Oncology.
The department's current research projects include the following Ministry of Science and Technology project: a multicenter, open-label clinical study of stereotactic body radiotherapy combined synchronously with immune checkpoint inhibitors for early-stage non-small cell lung cancer (2018YFC1313202: Zhu Guangying); China-Japan Friendship Hospital–Beijing University of Chemical Technology Joint Fund projects: 1. Precision detection of lung cancer driver genes based on deep learning and next-generation sequencing data (PYBZ1834, Gao Liwei); 2. Application of an electrochemiluminescence sensor for detecting CA215 in the diagnosis of early-stage lung cancer (PYBZ1821, Xiong Ying). China-Japan Friendship Hospital projects: 1. Study on the application of miR-124 and miR-137 expression in early screening, prognostic assessment, and recurrence detection in patients with non-small cell lung cancer (2016-2-QN-12, Gao Liwei); study of the mechanism by which LncRNA PCNA-AS1 regulates radiotherapy resistance in non-small cell lung cancer (2018-2-QN-30, Teng Feng).
The department provides teaching for eight-year-program students, master's students, and doctoral students at Peking University Health Science Center, and accepts radiation oncology clinicians, medical physicists, and radiologic technologists for further training. It has completed the national continuing education program Multidisciplinary Summit Forum on Pulmonary Nodules and Lung Cancer for three consecutive years.
The department's management policy is the “two-for” principle: for patients and for staff. The entire department promotes unity through the inclusive spirit expressed in the Analects as “nothing is absolutely permissible, and nothing is absolutely impermissible,” jointly fostering a positive atmosphere in which “doctors serve patients, and the entire department supports doctors.” Guided by the ancient maxim “learning prevents rigidity,” the department pursues lifelong learning and continuous improvement, working together to realize the dream of revitalizing the Department of Radiation Oncology at China-Japan Friendship Hospital.
