Respiratory Medicine
The Department of Respiratory Medicine was founded in 1972, initially as a respiratory disease specialty group, and the Department of Respiratory Medicine was formally established in 1994. It is currently a Beijing municipal clinical key specialty, an excellent unit of the national PCCM standardization construction project, and a national drug clinical trial institution, and is also one of the largest, professionally strongest and most comprehensive respiratory departments among Beijing's Grade-A tertiary general hospitals.
As of 2025, the Department of Respiratory Medicine has a total of 91 beds across its three campuses in Xicheng, Tongzhou and Shunyi, with a respiratory intensive care unit, a pulmonary function laboratory, a bronchoscopy room, a sleep monitoring room, etc. The department has 30 physicians in total, including 7 chief physicians and 5 associate chief physicians, all of whom hold positions in academic societies at the provincial level or above. There are 3 doctoral supervisors and 1 master's supervisor, and many physicians have successively gone abroad for further study and research.
The department has extremely rich clinical experience in the diagnosis, differential diagnosis and treatment of respiratory diseases; its research on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and cardiopulmonary exercise physiology has reached an advanced domestic level. In 2025, the department was awarded the national PCCM COPD specialty "Demonstration Unit" title. The department has advanced and complete medical equipment and was one of the earliest departments in the country to establish a pulmonary function laboratory, a sleep monitoring room and a bronchoscopy room. Since 2023, more than 100 cases of percutaneous puncture ablation of pulmonary masses have been performed; this technique is characterized by "minimal trauma, few complications, quick recovery and definite efficacy". In addition, interventional procedures such as bronchoscopic cryotherapy, electrocautery, laser and argon knife, as well as ultrasound endoscopy-guided mediastinal lymph node puncture, stent placement via rigid bronchoscopy, electroresection of masses and foreign body removal are routinely performed. The department has also carried out precise localization and diagnosis/treatment of peripheral lung lesions via electromagnetic navigation, providing safer, more efficient and minimally invasive diagnostic and therapeutic options for patients with pulmonary nodules.
The department is a Beijing standardized residency training base and a doctoral student training site of the Department of Respiratory Medicine of Capital Medical University; it also has 1 postdoctoral cooperative supervisor and undertakes the teaching of medical/nursing interns, standardized residency trainees, visiting physicians, and master's and doctoral students. In recent years, the department has presided over the completion of 5 National Natural Science Foundation projects, more than 20 provincial and ministerial-level clinical and basic research projects, and has undertaken more than 20 clinical drug trials, publishing more than 150 SCI articles and core journal articles.
